Hey to anyone that can help. I have a bone stock 89 yota 4x4 pickup, and I'd like some ideas on what I should do first to make it off road worthy. I don't have much money, so cheap ideas would be the most preferred. Thanks.

Lock the rear. It'll make a big difference. And get some small bumpstops for te front and undo the swaybar on one side or take it off completely.

OK:
Lockers
Remove the sway bar (or get discos)
Cut the IFS bumpstops (6 of them) to about 1/2 inch thick
Run 31s

or...
Cut the fenders, 2 inch lift springs in back, crank the T-bars (get Sway-A-Way replacements), regear, lockers F/R, run 33s.

Since lockers/tires/gears are needed, they don't count. The first option is free, the second is cheap ($100 for T-bars, $30 for new adjusting bolts)

Oh yeah...keep a list of everyone who tells you to go SAS...then, when you see them on the trail, you can show them what IFS and good driving can do!

How much is your "not much money"? I'd try to do things you could still use in the future, if and when you went SAS. In the meantime:

a)Rear locker/spool/weld
b)Small body lift (1", 1.5")
c)32" tires, or 33xnarrow
d)Tcase gears when you can afford them.

That stuff right there, plus some body protection, will get you onto, and through, some good trails.

YOU'RE IN LUCK!!! I know of a guy who is selling his IFS lift for very cheap. He's selling his $700 Trailmaster 4" IFS lift, $40 Rockstomper IFS travel kit (will give you a bit more travel ), and two Rancho 9000 shocks, all for a measly $400. If your interested, give him a holler at [email protected] . BTW, I think he lives in San Diego. This is only a lift for the front, so you still have to do the back. I'd suggest the Chevy's if your going for budget.

I actually do have the 3" blocks and the rear rs9000 will be available pretty soon too. So the whole kit-n-cabudle, $450. Let me know if you are interested. These guys already told you right. Traction is always the key. Lockers and mud tires. The lift can even wait. A body lift is a good inexpensive way to fit bigger meats too. Roger brown sells custom body lift for a really good price. Good luck,
