I was talking to my girlfriends father who is an old car guru..

He mentioned of a kit that would turn first gen toyota pickups (or probably any others for that matter) into full time all wheel drive trucks.

It was done via replacing the front driveshaft with a Ford-Ferguson style converter with a silicon fluid inside which when sheared would stiffen up, allowing some but little slip. Just enough to allow for some play. He also said they stopped sellign them a while ago :(

This is for my DD, and AWD is just great. Any ideas?

I have one of those in my Land Cruiser! On the street the all wheel drive works great. On snowy roads it's nice to drive but as soon as you lift a tire off road your going to want a way to lock up that unit. On 93 and later Land Cruisers when you put the truck into low range the viscous coupler is locked keeping both axles running at the same speed.

I have seen aftermarket couplers that can be added to a drive shaft but without a way to lock it up I would not want to add this to a existing 4wd truck.

Wow!

Yeah, he mentioned there was no way to lock it... I'd be ok with that though for the advantages of AWD. If I needed to do something Id just swap out the driveshaft, 8 bolts, no big deal..

What all do you know about them? What is the one in yours, do they still use the 8"? And the same mounting flanges? I'd reallly love to have one of these! :)
