I'm currently in the process of converting my 11/70 FJ 40 to four wheel discs. Have mini fronts and Cadillac rears. I currently have a stock, fairly fresh master cylinder on it (with the dual resevoirs). I expect to need an upgrade to optimize this conversion and have seen numerous options from late 40 MCs to 80 MCs to converting to GM.

What's the opinion of you board members for the best, the cheapest and best bang for the buck.

Thanks for your opinions.

On edit: I'm running 35 inch Mud Terrains if it affects anyone's answers.

There has been a lot of talk about this. do a search on "brake master cylinder" and you will find an crap load of information.

I have mini truck on the front and GM 1/2 ton on the rear and I am using a stock 76' 40 master cylinder. I didn't have to modify anything. It fit right in.

hope this helps.

Thanks Rico, I did search but didn't find anything definitive.

How does the lter M/C differ from the original? How do your brakes work? Do you have enough braking power to lock all four? Did you add a proportioning valve? How big a tire do you run? Can I come up with any more questions?

I appreciate the input.

GeeEmm.. '73 Corvette with manual brakes. 1" bore, works PERFECT with no power assist, and, is like $25.

FJ60 calipers front, Monte's in the back.

I tried to do the GM route, but all the lines would have had to be re-run, so I went with a 77 booster and a 1986 Toyota Supra M/C from Pep Boys for $70.

I run a hot engine and BIG tires and this setup works very well.

I highly recommend it.

I think you can get away with your stock booster with a good new master.

I'm running a stock booster and 97 master for the rear disc brake 80's. Works fine.It bolted on. I have a proportioning valve in line on the rears because I was told I needed it but it stops evenly with valve all the way open.

Thanks for the input gentlemen (applied loosely)!

Nolen, when you said I could use a stock booster with a good new master did you mean my L/C master or an upgrade master (Supra in this case)?

The Supra master was really nice. Bolted right up.

Bonus was the one I got was complete with the res. and all.

Mini and late TLC work fine too.

Keep the booster.

I am running the same as Nolen with f350 ford brakes in the front and gm 1/2 ton rears, the only thing i like is the willood prop. valve. It's nice for the trial to make the rears a little touchy for going down super steep slabs and shelfs, then back to balanced for the street. Supra master is sweet bolt it up and much cheaper then a new Land Cruiser.
