Whoever you talked to at AA is a fawkin idiot. Use a CJ bell housing, T176 or T150 I believe...and AA does make it cause thats what I have in mine...and it has a great big "AA" imprinted on it

I have a 4.0 in my heep with a t-18. What I did is take my t-5 bell housing to parts mike and he drilled out the holes and made a bracket for a CPS sensor. That is a cheaper route than AA. Once I had that done everything bolted right up.

Can't you also get the crank thingy from the Mopar MPFI conversion, and put it up in front?

I was under the impression that the t18 bellhousing would bolt to a 4.0L. I was planning on using a t18 out of a 78 cherokee for that reason. have I been mislead?

The bolt pattern for 258, 304, 360, 401, and other amc engines are the same as the 4.0l. So there for the T 18 bell will bolt up to a 4.0 but you will have to make revisions for the cps sensor. Either make a bracket and bore a hole in the bell or get the relocation kit that puts on front of the engine and runs off of a new harmonic balancer.

On another note the cherokee and j series pickup t 18's have a long input shaft and a funky spacer on the front of the tranny to locate the trans further back in the cab of the cherokee and j trucks. You can put it in there but it will move your shifters further back and make the raer shaft shoter and front longer. Would be a good swap for a scrambler though. :flipoff2:

But that long shaft can be easily swapped :flipoff2: Is it the Ford 2x4 one we want? Cant remember

I will probably be boring a hole for the cps and swaping for a short shaft. are the bellhouseings differnt or is it just the space between the engine and tranny?

I dont know if I under stand the ?. The bell housing from the cherokee will fit the 4.0. If you swap it for the short shaft, and yes i used a 2x4 ford input and all other guts just about to rebuild my cj t18 except the output shaft ofcoarse, the adapter and the tranny have the same bolt pattern. So if you go with short shaft and ditch the adapter you can still use the same cherokee bell. I hope this helps. :flipoff2:

what about the clutch? Seems like the t-18 would have an external slave and the ax15 the 4.0 was probably bolted to would have had an internal. Do you just have to set up the YJ for an external slave? or can you change the t-18 to an internal slave?

What engine was he running the Mopar balancer on?
I am setting up a 4.0L in my YJ right now and thought I would go with the Mopar balancer kit. When I got the new balancer, I found the pulley ribs do not line up with the stock pulleys. There is a difference between 4.0L and 4.2L belt systems. Everything on the 4.0L system is about 3/8" back from the 258 style Mopar pulley. The only fix I could figure out was getting all of the bracketry, water pump, and pulleys from a CJ with a serpentine belt system.

For the input shaft; T-18's for a jeep came with 2 input shafts, one long, one short. Short was used in CJs and I-6 FSJs. Long in V-8 FSJs.

Bell swap, easy way. Use a 3 spd bell T-150,176. Bolt right on. Ford input shaft, all the same 2wd or 4wd.
