I did a search, but didn't find anything. What is the maximum size tires you guys suggest running on a 3/4 ton 10 bolt front end under a light weight rig? (Suzuki samurai). I've heard they are pretty much equal to d44's, but I thought I would ask you guys just to make sure. Thanks for your input.

Light throttle and open you could maybe get away with 37"s, heavy trottle and locked you could maybe get away with 33"s
I know its a wide range but its a broad question :flipoff2:

I only use throttle when absolutely necessary. I consider myself a light footed driver. But my rig does have a 200+ horsepower engine in it. However, I was planning on welding the front, or at least locking it up. I have seen the chromo axles, but I don't know if I should build up a 10 bolt like that, rather than going with something stronger. Is the dana 44 that much stronger? I have only dealt with zuk and yota axles in the past, so pardon my seemingly ignorant questions. :)

the rings on the 10 and 44 are about = but i do beleive that the pinion is slightly larger on the 44 but that is from a fellow zuk guy so take what its worth

The pinion "shaft" I thought was larger on the 10bolt. The pinion size will be determined by ratio. For all intents and purposes they are fairly equal though. Deeper gears available for the 44 though.

10 bolt

I run a 3/4 ton 10 bolt on the front of my 4runner with a 4.3 and 42s been on about ten runs. (mostly tellico and grayrock in Al.)
My truck wieghs 4850 and i havent broken it yet (not to say it wont break but it hasnt yet) I tacked my caps in the axles when i put them in. Its locked with 5.13 gears nothing else special.
I would think you would be allright with a lightweight zuki.

If its a good deal i would get it then upgradeto chromo shafts if you start having problems.

Allmost the same as a 44, same from the knuckles out & the same u-joint, not worth changing to a 44 imo.
Front 10bolts are ok to use but a rear 10 bolt is another story:nuke:

And for your question, I would say 38's max with a light petal, but I would stick to 35's.

GM 10-bolt front axle

type: simi floating
spline count: 28 and 30
factory ratios: 2.56-4.56
maximum tire size for stock axle: 35"(four wheeler magizene)
strong point: stong ring and pinion for its size, larger ring gear bolts, spider gears and pinion diameter when compaired to a dana44

I've wheeled hard with 10-bolts in the front & rear.
And I've changed tire sizes 3 times (33 35 & 40)
Unlocked with 35's, I never broke a shaft.
40's didn't work well with the 10-bolts. TOO BIG.
Locked rear up to 35" tires will hold good. After that, they start snapping way to often for what seems like no reason at all.
Locked front sucks, The ears on the front axle shafts for the wheel joints are way to thin to put up with any kind of binding.
SNAP - SNAP - SNAP - SNAP-
and I would bring extra shafts, front & rear and all the way around! And some gear oil, a drain pan, silicone, rags, brake cleaner,ect... MY .02

i've broke 2 10bolt rears with govlocks and only 33" tires (285/75-16s) and they are not nearly as big as a 33x12.50 but i was driving it HARD both times...lifting a front tire on a excab fullsize seems to be fairly hard on 10bolt rears even with 33s....i'm hoping that the 8lug 10bolt front i've got will hold up to the 40s i'm puttin on it in a couple weeks when i get them...so long as it holds long enough for me to find a chevy D60 front

The old style gov locks are much more prone to detonating than the newer ones. Im not sure when they switched styles, maybe 99 with the body style change??? I wouldnt run an older one if you payed me. I dont remember the details but a certain pin breaks, and your diff basically grenades. This problem is MUCH less prevelant in the newer ones.
