Ok, so are the early 80's as gutless as they seem? Shoot, with a 4.0 motor these things should haul there heavy ass around fine, but I have driven 3 and they are not that impressive.
So, what about v8 swaps? I'm thinking using a toyota mini t case, and then adapt that to a 700r4, and use a 350TBI chevy motor.
That would cure the power problem...so next is the gears, are there 5:29 gears available for that rear end?
If so, who has them?

The first 80s have the 3FE, in '93 they got the 1FZ. The 1FZ is mighty, by cruiser standards. When I drove my 93K-miles '94 home, I did 95mph for much of I-5.

If you go with an aftermarket drivetrain, then gearing is open. I don't know of any low gears for the stock tranny/tcase, so diffs are it until someone comes up with a doubler or a super-low tcase.

I would love to have an 80 for wheeling. Mine is a road machine, and it will go on camping trips.

I was surprised to find the 1FZ engine has peak HP/torque pretty similar to a "crate 350". Made the thought of a V8 conversion much less appealing to me. If you trust the 4runner tranny, get a 95 and add a turbo or supercharger for a really impressive powertrain.

I am looking for a 94 for a newer trail rig. Only problem is finding the right truck for the right price. Everyone seems to think these trucks are gold plated or something....

I thought about this, but will the stock tranny hold up? What is that tranny, is it similar to any other toyota tranny? I'm just worried that I'll blow a bunch of money on swapping in a v8 and using Marks adapter then the tranny will fry, and I'll be left with a longer project.
What about swaping in the 1fz? anyone ever done it? The reason I don't want to step up to the 93 newer is that they really hold there value, like $15000 vs $7000 for a 91-92, for an extra $9000 I can do a whole lot to the slightly older rig, and from what I have found, condition is the same...

I don't see too many 80 series rigs for $7K <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">. Maybe rolled ones.

I don't think the 1fzfe swap would be worth the money, but it's your call of course. My options would be fj80 with V8 swap (and stock tranny, etc.) or '93/'94 fzj80. In the end, the costs will be similar, but remember that you get a FF rearend and optional lockers with the fzj80. Much better leather in the later model rigs ('95 and on) if that's important to you.

Talk to Jeff Jones about how the tranny holds up. The A442F tranny (and A440F) are extremely beefy. Jeff's had some problems, but from what I understand, they are due to installation issues.

Do you have an actual e-mail for Jeff Jones? I looked at the site, its all simple so far, even the last mods will be no problem, I definetly think that the V8 is the way to go, leather doesn't matter, I can buy the rear end of the latter model for less than an arb, and $7000-9000 is what there selling for around Oregon right about now....so I want to get one while there at that price, with the theory that I can make it into a very capable rig for less than a 4 runner costs...Any more thoughts..

Oregon must be very cheap for Cruisers. You can't get a fj62 for that price here in Idaho.

You can find a complete fzj80 rearend with locker for less than $650? If so, send me one.

I'm with cruiserman on the FZJ80 rear ends. Last one I found was $2000 for the complete axle (including electric locker and brakes). Where do you get the complete rear that cheap?? I WANT 1!!!! <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce2.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce2.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0">

One of my best friends runs a large junk yard, thier a nationwide chain, he owes me some favors, or parts, and actually I was counting in the compressor so its about $900 in reality. This was a 94? rear axle, had disk brakes, full floater, locker, all the good stuff. The reason they cost $2000 elsewhere is because that is a good deal if you don't know someone who owns a junk yard, and of course they won't show you how much they are making, and how many they never sell. We checked it out, this place has sold 2 in the last 3 years, with about 15 of them hanging out. Want to get really mad, we checked into rigs that have been crushed, guess what 2 have been crushed with the front and rear axles still under the rig. Can you say $30 in scrap metal....
So, the deals are out there, and right now no one is buying anything around here so price's are dropping like rocks.
I would be willing to get some axles, with my time, investment in capital, and having to probably pull them, I would turn them at $1350 you pick up.
I'm guessing from the input I'm getting, I should just buy any 80 series I see at $7000 or so and figure I can't loose...and if anyone is looking and willing to take a trip I'll go check it out and give you the number on some of these...
