2001 Montero Sport ES 3.0L

I bought it new, and it did daily driver duty till 2006, at which point it got 4.90 gears, a rear ARB locker, 2"rear coils/2" body lift, and 33's.

I wheeled it for a year like that, then the SAS started.

Got my Dana44 from a 79 F150 and installed 4.88 gears and another ARB.

Used the wedge parts of the Ford radius arms, and spliced them to 2"x.250"DOM with some .250 gussets and 1" heims on the end. These arms ended up being 6" longer than stock. I located the axle an inch forward from the IFS centerline.

Had to modify the trans xmember to clear the arms. Now it bolts to the inside of the framerail instead of under it.

Great build like the do it you self in the garage thing!
I,am new here but i was thinking is the d44 you put in the front match up with the original mitsu in the rear are they in same length?

I have a 98 pajero 2,8 diesel that i,am building in "my mind" right now but it would be nice to know for the future.

sry for my english am from iceland and my wrighting english is not perfect!

Thanks.
Originally I had 2" wheel spacers to get the Mitsu rear axle closer to the width of the D44. But then I replaced the mitsu rear with a Ford 9 inch rear that matches the D44.

Couple updates to share.

Got these LED under cabinet lights from a friend for free so i mounted one on each corner. Well one month later and two of them are inoperative and another has gotten dim:shaking:

Front bumper is done for now. I'm planning on taking a piece of tube from the side of the bumper, around the wheel well and landing it on the slider, but that will be a winter project.

Shaved the v shaped crossmember after getting hung up on some rocks.

before

after

Shaved the pinion guard, too

Thanks. I'll be ready this year, I'm currently shopping for a tow rig/work truck. :smokin:

Hope to see you in the trails!
Nice build man!
It's been a few years. Original screen name was lost in the password-apocalypse.

Now photobucket stopped alowing free linking of pics, but they should still be there if you click them.

New pic, one of these things is not like the others!

Transferred all my pics to HERE because screw photobucket!

Finally made it to Harlan County's Black Mountain Off Road Adventure Area last month. Been wanting to go for years. Some challenging stuff out there, to say the least.

Some of the trails I did; Cream Puff, Rock Garden, Killin' Time, White Trail Crawl.

The Sport has been reliable, and at this point, 10 years since the axle swap, I think I have most of the bugs worked out. Some temporary fixes have become permanent, and the interior could use some refining. She still runs hot, I think that might be because my radiator is at an angle, but most of the time I can keep it under 215 with the heater on.

Just haven't had time to do more of the things I wanted to. Got a half finished rear swaybar in the garage, still no winch, tubework around wheel wells.... That's the way it goes.:flipoff2:

Sorry I am new to this site but I can't see any of the pics... am I dong something wrong?

Went to Bundy Hill in Michigan, struggled through the tire pit and then bkoke 2 axleshafts about a minute later. Got pinned between 2 huge tires and heard pop pop. Right front and left rear both broke at the diff.

Here's getting winched out after winching the huge tire over from in front of me.

I have spares for both, should be ready again shortly.
