9 times out of 10 a faulty cruise control as actually just a worn out clock spring in the steering wheel. Have you had any issues with the horn or anything like that? Otherwise check the vacuum lines going to the cruise control uint, on a diesel I belive they run from the vacuum pump, so there may be a problem there.
