My dad has an 87 F-150 1/4 ton that is sitting the back yard doing nothing because the tranny is shot, its auto. Can anyone tell me what tranny this is? Its got a 302 in it, with a little freshening up would it pull my TJ to the trail without too much trouble?? Any info would help as I'm thinking about making it my tow rig, If I replace/rebuild the tranny.

The only sure fire way to tell, is know how many bolts are in the pan, and what shape it is... But in 87', I am assuming it is an overdrive?? It is probably an AOD. That is my best guess anyway, let me knoe on the rest of the details.

yup either a C6 (3 speed)or a AOD (4 speed),
but... sence you said ti was busted up i am guessing its an AOD

it will be fine to pull, its a little underpowerd but it will still work fine

If cable controlled and with OD, then it is AOD. If computer controlled and OD, then it is E4OD.

No E4OD in 87...
