Sorry if this is in the wrong place. We had a chevy truck with a sold axle swap come into the shop, when the passenger tire was removed we found the wheel bearing had exploded so we need to replace it and the seal. The problem is we dont know what this axle came from. It has 10 bolts on the front cover, 30 splines inner and 19 outer on the shot axle shaft (passenger side)we have removed, it has 8 lugs. To me it looks like a dana 44 but I'm not sure. Could anyone help so we can order the parts for this.

Grab a scraper and start looking for a date code somewhere on the front of the long tube - application is a lot easier to guess at when you can narrow down the approximate year.

OK I found some numbers kind of hard because the owner painted the axle. On the top of the diff it has a 2 and under that c36585 and on the bottom of the diff it has the numbers 44-5cf

Thanks now I can get the parts ordered but i have a question, How do you read the numbers? Is the 11 74 7AE read 11th month 74th year? What is the 7AE?

Thanks for all your help but it turns out that the owner decided to get his own parts instead of having us order them. He went to a 4x4 shop and they gave him parts from a 76 ford (bearings, races, spindle) and they fit. I wonder why ford parts fit on a chevy axle but maybe it was modified?

Many 44 parts interchange. Ford front hubs on a Chevy, etc.

..I also wonder if the bearings on the other side of the axle would be the same? (with visible bearing/race #'s) ...I also wonder if they are about to explode from consistent lack of maintenance?
