I just bought a 84 Toy and am having some problems I think. Here's what it is doing when in 4wd it makes a loud humming noise which sounds like it's coming from the transfer case. When in 2wd but hubs locked it makes a spinning noise kind of like a loose belt or chain on a pulley. Also when in 4wd if I try to drive in reverse it will throw it back into 2wd is this normal? It's also a real biatch to shift from 4wd to 2wd is there a trick to this or is my 84 f&%$ed

Sounds like your transfercase is screwed. I would take to a good 4x4 shop to make sure. <IMG SRC="smilies/jeep1.gif" border="0">

Have you checked your slip shaft on the front driveline??
Does it still have a CV??
Does the driveline spin easily when everything is unlocked and 2wd???
If its the t-case, just go to a yard and get a new one, much cheaper...

I don't think it's your t-case. Check your drivelines first. Make sure everything is tight!

The front driveshaft is very loose where the one piece slips into the other. If I grab it and give it a push or pull the inner piece will move quite a bit inside the outer piece. Also it kind of spins freely when unlocked and in 2wd. What I mean by kind of is when laying under the truck with my head towards the front looking up I would spin it to the right no problems but when I would spin it to the left it would either spin freely or get very stiff or sometimes completely bind up which I guess would explain why it would throw it back into 2wd when I would try to drive in reverse. The front drive shaft seems to have all kinds of play in it almost every where it is attached to something. I also messed with the rear a little and the only place I found any play is in the transfer case where the driveshaft flange attaches.
