can i use the top shifter plate of a 4 spd 1980 on the 5 spd tranny 1982 or 83? i was looking at them and they look identical except having no extra fork for the 5th gear.iknow i wont have 5th gear but this is just a temp fix for now. the 5 speed top plate is jamed and cant shift 1 and 2nd.and help would greatly be apreciated. thanks!! <IMG SRC="smilies/question.gif" border="0">

Well lets see if you say the top plate on the 1980 resembles the 82-83 then the one you think is 80 is not and if your not going to have 5th gear just put the 4spd in and go if it works For the record the top plates are interchangable for 81 thru 83 minus the fact just ever thing will not always work and possible cause damage with out the saftly interlock to maintain proper gear function more details are need to provide a more accurate answer <IMG SRC="smilies/glasses.gif" border="0">

The 4spd is toast so i cant use it,and one of the steel shafts that hold the fork on on the top plate has popped out and cant get in into is position again in the castinbg where there is a ball bearing the steel shaft slides in and cant figure how to get the shaft past the ball. right on the the top plate where there is a removable bolt that bolts in the side of the plate, i think that is for the little spring that sits oposite of the ball bearing.i have 2 4spd' tops and and they are both identical to the 5 spd top except for the 5th gear adjuster.
