Neutral Safty switch??

ok figured it should go in this section.
i have driven manuals all my life and will be putting an auto in my CJ.
Do i need a friggen nuetral safty switch ?? seriously does it hurt an auto to be started in gear?(i doubt it but just being sure)
and i know better than to run into someone while starting my car, and i figure that is the only reason it s there.

I don't know if prolonged use that way will hurt it but I do know that it will start in gear

The NSS went out in my daughters Scout and, for a temp fix, I jumpered the switch so it would at least start. I played around a little starting it in gear and it worked fine. It was just a couple times though, not a real test.
