I have a buddy that is shopping for a ¾ ton diesel. He’s driven the PSD and the CTD. He likes the Ford, but feels the CTD is a superior power plant.

Here’s an e-mail he sent me.

Dude do I have the Diesel bug bad.......I can't decide between
Ford and Dodge though. Have gone to many forums and
most people think like I do. I think Ford just has a
better overall truck......but you have to love the
Cummings.
Transmission- Advantage Ford.....5 speed vs 4 in the
automatic, and I think it is the strongest on the
market. Someone said it can handle 745lb ft of torque
although I can't confirm that.....more than the
Allison in GM trucks (545lb).
Suspension/hubs- Adv Ford. Leafs vs Coils and well no
hubs on the Dodge.
Transfer case- You can order the Ford with shift on
the floor, not so with the Dodge (electric turn dial)
with most nice packages.
Interior- Ford...just better quality.

The Dodge however can also be had with SRW in the 1
ton......my mistake. I like the quad cab configuration
on the Dodge better than the supercab ford (more room,
real doors without the length of a crew cab). And
Dodge gets the nod on safety for the fact that it had
better brakes and side curtain airbags optional. It
also has quicker steering (but so what). Also you can
get a Nav system on the Dodge.

What it really comes down to is how much better is
the Cummins than the 6.0 Powerstroke. If they have all
the bugs worked out of the PSD then there might not be
any difference in the first 200K.....and for 90% of
people including me the rest of the ford makes up for
that. There is no arguing the power of the PSD
although the Cummings is right there.

Hey some guys on the web said next year the
Cummings was going to V-8 configuration. Now that
would be a shame! I don't buy it though. You need to
go drive the two and help me out.

(end e-mail message)

I own a 1st gen. CTD, but would be partial to the PSD if buying new. Leaf springs and straight axles are a huge selling point in my book. Also, the company I work for owns a fleet of ¾ ton diesels – All fords, the same goes for other construction companies in the area. Even in parts of the state which are Chevy or Dodge country. I figure these companies operate and maintain fleets know more about the trucks than I ever will. To them, it’s all about money, which boils down to reliability. The mechanics say the only thing wrong with the Ford is the mass balanced flywheel. When it goes out the guys keep driving them until it destroys the transmission.

The Dodge has a long history of tranny problems. American Elec. Power in this area quit buying Dodge trucks this year because the transmissions keep tearing up and are on nationwide back order. Most of there trucks are gassers. I don’t know of many people that own a Dodge that haven’t had tranny problems and front end problems (alignment, ball joints, bushings).

Get a Dodge with a manual shift.

And the front end problems were 4x4 only, and "supposedly" have been fixed on the new gen trucks, but I'm still hearing some complaints.

I went with the Dodge. The 48RE is stronger than the 47RE, but the jury is still out on its long term durability. You can also choose the 6-speed whos clutch is good for around 800 lb-ft before you need to step up to one with more holding power.

The Dodge can be had with a floor shifter (I have one). The Dodge has a tighter turning radius. Both the Ford and the Dodge can be had in a 1 ton SRW. If comparing Supercab verus Quad, the Dodge has more room. However, the Ford Crewcab is the largest in its class.

No doubt Ford makes a decent truck. I for one prefer the Dodge and love driving it every chance I get. I use it to pull almost 10k worth of offroad rig/trailer and it does a fine job.

Also, there are no plans for a V8 CTD. Just more mis-information.

Are there any Ford guys that want to chime in?

DSI?
Others?
well...i dont want to speak for DSI but i clearly remember him saying these exact words, "....my problem ridin' diesel...."

im not a ford guy and im not a dodge guy. im a cummins guy. i bought a truck to haul my junk and drive everyday. i wanted a Medium duty diesel in a pickup so i bought the dodge. if you go over too the dieselstop.com there are more threads about broken down trucks or trucks that have been at the dealer for weeks on end that you couldnt pay me to own one.

as far as trannys....i have a 6speed and would never consider an auto for a workhorse type application.

I have 49,000+ miles on my 03 dodge HO, i still grin like a loon everyt\ime I start it up. There is no comparison between the 2 engines right now. Unless you are gonna have 6+ footers riding in the back seat everyday, the dodge QC is big enough. Steering is awesome, feels very quick and responsive, no wandering.
The Dodge is cheaper too.

I'm not a Dodge or Ford guy either, the Cummins made me buy the dodge and now I do like the dodge even without factoring in the Cummins.

I really cannot add anything - I have been happy with all of the Ford/P.S. I have had. The Dodge/Cummins I had I was happy with the engine but I spent more $$$ on the chassis, 95% of that being on the front end than I have on all of my Fords combined. The problems I had with Dodge at both the dealer and regional level are the reason I will never buy another one.

As far as 2004 they seem to be evenly matched. As far as problems they seem to be overstated by people on all sides of the brand arguments. Enthusiast websites are a good place for information but they are certainly not representative. Take this one for example - someone who based their opinion of 4x4 enthusiasts on this site would assume that everyone who owns a 4x4 was a wrench wielding, welder owning nutcase willing to build stuff from scratch type of person. JU proves that this is not the case.

I would simply drive both, price out both and buy the one that you want.

If he is going to buy a used truck, then either the CTD or 7.3 powerstroke are good platforms. As for new trucks, well....just remember that the 305 hp CTD dynoed in for more hp and torque than the 325 hp 6.0 PSD. Also the new CTD will come with 325 hp 600 ft/lbs torque. I have heard of numerous problems with the 6.0 PSD's and they had over 600 buy backs already. Get the dodge if you want a tough, reliable truck. If you want to be a stunna and drive a 2wd truck thats lifted 14 inches, has 45 inch mud terrain tires that never see's any dirt road, get the ford.

I bet the Ford in CJ Lagos pic has a Cummins or a Cat because Ford doesn't sell that size truck with a PS. Get the Dodge :D , I have an 03 CTD Quadcab , 3500 SRW and love it. Also the new Cummins has 600lbs tq and 325hp :D He can get a good deal on a Dodge if he wants to drive up to MD. PM ScottFJ40 on here , he's a salesman at a Dodge dealer and I think he will sell anyone on PBB a truck at a GOOD price. It's can't hurt to ask. Maybe he can tell you what the real dealer cost is on one.

I have had no problems with my 7.3L PSD. I can maintain 55+ easily on a 7% grade stock towing about 7500#.

I wouldn't want to risk the problems that the 6.0 is having. If you can't find a 7.3, get the CTD.

I think both are decent trucks. I have not heard of many 6.0 problems after they figured out the injector problems. My Dodge has been decent, but I hate not having front hubs. My decision on Ford vs Dodge came down to the fact that Dodge had a 7/70 powertrain warrenty while Ford was 3/36(both have 7/100 engine warrenty) and I wanted a auto tranny. I figured the extra warrenty was worth about $1200. Also Dodge had better factory rebates ;) at the time. They will both get your $hit to the trail.
