I have a buddy that is shopping for a ¾ ton diesel. He’s driven the PSD and the CTD. He likes the Ford, but feels the CTD is a superior power plant.
Here’s an e-mail he sent me.
Dude do I have the Diesel bug bad.......I can't decide between
Ford and Dodge though. Have gone to many forums and
most people think like I do. I think Ford just has a
better overall truck......but you have to love the
Cummings.
Transmission- Advantage Ford.....5 speed vs 4 in the
automatic, and I think it is the strongest on the
market. Someone said it can handle 745lb ft of torque
although I can't confirm that.....more than the
Allison in GM trucks (545lb).
Suspension/hubs- Adv Ford. Leafs vs Coils and well no
hubs on the Dodge.
Transfer case- You can order the Ford with shift on
the floor, not so with the Dodge (electric turn dial)
with most nice packages.
Interior- Ford...just better quality.
The Dodge however can also be had with SRW in the 1
ton......my mistake. I like the quad cab configuration
on the Dodge better than the supercab ford (more room,
real doors without the length of a crew cab). And
Dodge gets the nod on safety for the fact that it had
better brakes and side curtain airbags optional. It
also has quicker steering (but so what). Also you can
get a Nav system on the Dodge.
What it really comes down to is how much better is
the Cummins than the 6.0 Powerstroke. If they have all
the bugs worked out of the PSD then there might not be
any difference in the first 200K.....and for 90% of
people including me the rest of the ford makes up for
that. There is no arguing the power of the PSD
although the Cummings is right there.
Hey some guys on the web said next year the
Cummings was going to V-8 configuration. Now that
would be a shame! I don't buy it though. You need to
go drive the two and help me out.

I own a 1st gen. CTD, but would be partial to the PSD if buying new. Leaf springs and straight axles are a huge selling point in my book. Also, the company I work for owns a fleet of ¾ ton diesels – All fords, the same goes for other construction companies in the area. Even in parts of the state which are Chevy or Dodge country. I figure these companies operate and maintain fleets know more about the trucks than I ever will. To them, it’s all about money, which boils down to reliability. The mechanics say the only thing wrong with the Ford is the mass balanced flywheel. When it goes out the guys keep driving them until it destroys the transmission.
The Dodge has a long history of tranny problems. American Elec. Power in this area quit buying Dodge trucks this year because the transmissions keep tearing up and are on nationwide back order. Most of there trucks are gassers. I don’t know of many people that own a Dodge that haven’t had tranny problems and front end problems (alignment, ball joints, bushings).
