I thought I read somewhere that it was still possible to get a new SM420 , somebody found some mothballed somewhere or somthing.
Or a good source for a good rebuilt one?

This may or may not ring a bell for someone out there but....... A few years ago, I was talking with Rick Pewe' (JP mag) & he said he had a NEW SM420 in his old flatfender. He said he got it from a surplus military place in Arkansas. I asked the same question to a local tranny guy & he said they were coming outta Arkansas too.

They were used in gamma goats up to about 1975, so you can still find NOS trannys out there form govt stock. Also try Tourist Automotive Transmissions in SLC. They have a bunch of NOS sm420 parts.
Nice Pin Head, how did you know about these guys..? I bought my NV4500 there and am currently doing some web work for them. They are awesome...

At one point I had located a couple gammagoats, went to look at them specifiaclly for the trannies, and they were not 420's in the ones I saw. I did however personally confirm a rumor I had heard at one point that some aircraft tugs had sm420's with 9 to 1 first gear. Drove it myself, crawled under and counted the revolutions...I'm a long time member of the mvpa, and have never seen nos 420's advertised by anyone in there...

420's

Was in Salt Lake in '95, pretty large Millitary surplus outfit there, can not remember the name. They had two, that had been gone thru by the military, got them both, 150.00 I have one left, but I am not going to part with it. They are out there, Midwest military, talk to John, he could find you one if anyone can.

I know my bud Tim H had (or had) a NOS 420 in the shed within the last month.

Several years ago I was at Tourist auto talking to the old man about SM420 and he said that when TAD closed ( Toole Army Depot) he bought a ton of 420s and parts. The interesting part was that he said thaey also used them in a light weight version of a Tank?
I tend to believe him...
