no running lights?

me and my buddy hit the trails tonight, and he got stuck in his samurai a few times. mostly just hung up on massive chunks of ice. well his bumper had been pretty mangled up beforehand, and it only got worse. when we were leaving the trails, it actually fell right off and he ran it over. with the bumper came his directional light wires and all that good stuff. after the carnage, i noticed his running lights and directionals didnt work, but his brake lights did. what do you guys think the problem is?
