Noisy SM465 - 3rd and 4th gears

My SM465 is noisy, and particularly in 3rd and 4th gears. 4th gear sounds like it's winding up so tight that it would blow. I have not opened the case or anything to check it out, but I did check the fluid level and it was about 1/2 quart low, so I topped it off.

It is a speed sensative noise and once in 4th gear, it is present until the vehicle comes to a stop, but winds down with the speed of the vehicle. It is there with the clutch pushed in or not, so I ruled out being the clutch. It is there with the t-case in neutral, so I ruled out the t-case.

Anyone had a similar sound? It's sort of a whirring/grinding sound.

Just prior to hearing this sound, I built a new tranny crossmember that has the tranny more level than it was before. Before, it was tipped down a bit in the back. I also hand-bent the shifter lever (I used a lot of leverage!) to clear the dash on my YJ, but don't think that I damaged the end of the shifter any.

HELP!!!

Thanks in advance!

yeah, could be a bad output bearing on the trans, but not very common. have you checked the fluid level in the t-case. how's the rearend? if you can, you might want to run the rig on a rack and use a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise. i'd almost bet that it's in the t-case or rearend and not the trans.

I first thought that it would be t-case related, because the t-case was just removed, disassembled, then reassembled again and put back in. I thought I might have forgotten a part or something. Then I tried putting the t-case in neutral and go through the gears and I hear it it there, too, indicating that the t-case is not the culprit.

Has anyone rebuilt an SM465? I need to know what I'm looking at cost wise.

could still be in the t-case. even in neutral the input and idler gears are still spinning if i'm not mistaken.
was the noise there before the t-case was redone? or did it just start when the t-case went back in?!

It did start when the t-case went back in, but at the same time, I built a new tranny mount which shifted the rear of the tranny upward, and removed and rebent the shifter lever for the trans.

While I agree thaat it could still be in the t-case, I still kinda tend towards the tranny because it seems to be most prevalent in 3rd and 4th gear no matter if it's still at idle or revving.

The t-case would make more sense because it's really what we worked on, but everything seemed to go back in where it belonged and everything looked good.

Ya, I rebuilt my 465,, I paid $650.00ish But that included the rebuild kit, clutch, pressure plate, through out bearning, reverse gear, and some other stuff. I don't remember how much the kit was.
The rebuild was very easy,,, The hardest part was removing and installing the shifter.

I have a noise like that in my set up also.It sounds like mine is the t-case.If I park it backwards in my drive(the driveway has a pitch to it) it will make the noise for a couple of blocks then stop.If I park it frontwards it don't make any noise.I think it is the front input bearing. Anyway did you bend the shifter when it was on the case?Maybee it is partially engaging some of the gears.I would say it is in the t-case,since it wasn't there before the work was done and is after.Blazin

I did take the shifter out to bend it. I took it completely apart and put the end that goes into the tranny into the "tube" behind my front bumper on my YJ. I then took a 4" long peice of pipe that I have for a cheater and slid it onto the shifter end. I used all the leverage I could muster and it bent right where I needed it to be.

I drove the Jeep about 20 miles today round trip and the noise didn't get any worse, or any better. I'm thinking I'll just have to live with it since there are too many variables involved in tracking it down. I may pull the tunnel cover off and see if I can have my girlfriend drive it while I listen to various points with a mechanic's stethascope.

I may try parking it up on a rock or two and going through the gears to see if tipping the trans back down like it was has any affect on it. I did add some Lucas Oil Stabilizer to both the trans and t-case, so if it was just gear noise, that should have quieted it.

Anyway, than you to everyone for their suggestions.

To the guywho said that the longest part of his rebuild was removing and re-installing the shifter, why was it so hard? Mine didn't seem that hard at all. I'm sort of wondering if I did something wrong! Perhaps that IS why I'm getting that noise...

another way to tell would be to drain the fluids out of the t-case and trans into seperate containers. contamination should show up in at least one of them.
next time use a torch to heat up the shifter handle before you attempt to bend it. get the part of the shifter you want to bend red hot and it'll bend really easy.

I didn't want to muss up the purty chrome shifter... LOL (there actually IS some truth to that!!!)

I had the same thing happen to mine...Rebuilt the trans. and t-case!! Still there!! Put a cv on the rear driveshaft and problem solved!! I'd be willing to bet your getting reverbration from the u-joint's angle going all the way through to the tranny..Pull the rear shaft and engage the t-case and drive it in front wheel drive. That'll tell you if the rear shaft is the problem...

Thought about that too at first... then I tried putting the t-case in neutral and going through the gears. Driveshaft didn't spin, but the noise was present. I'd hate to go to a CV shaft after just apending $165 on the shaft that's in there!

Good call, though.

Is it going into reverse? Does it make the noise in reverse? I just reread part of this and you said your top went on real easy!! I've yet to get it done without getting severly pissed, and I've done it MANY times!! If you didnt get the the fork on the reverse idler, it could be rubbing the next gear to it making the noise..What t-case are you running? If you are using an a/a adapter, make sure the studs from adapter arent too far into the case and hitting a gear(had that happen too but it was a 435 not a 465)...

It does go into reverse just fine and I don't seem to notice any noise there (although I rarely am in reverse for much more than 10 feet)

All I removed was the shifter itself. There is like a pivot ball type thing on the shiter that you push in real hard and turn (I tap it with a hammer while turning to make it a little easier to turn).

I did have the shifter in there loosely one of the days and my girlfriend had to move the Jeep and while she was moving it, the shifter came out and she put it right back in. Could that have caused a problem? Is there a procedure that I was supposed to follow to put the shifter back in?

Thanks for the help! I think we may be onto something here...
