Is there some sort of national jack oil shortage I haven't heard about?????

Hydraulic jack oil can be had at any parts store. It's cheap. It's the right tool for the job.

Why risk a seal failure (and the jack dropping like a lead balloon) when the correct stuff is so cheap and easy to get?

I remember seeing a guy under a car, supported on a floor jack. No jack stands in place. The seal failed and the car started bleeding down. He was pumping the jack handle like mad with his foot to keep the car up. He was loosing the battle, and began screaming for help. Someone ran over and got a jack stand in, saving his life. This was in a professional shop (Chevy Dealership).

Don't risk it with the wrong oil. Always use jack stands.
