i think it was chris ridgeway that was using some old motor oil and tranny fluid as fuel in one of his rigs for towing.

anyone have a thought on that? esp with an old 89 7.3 idi diesel? :D

i've got gallons of old oil and tranny fluid that would be perfect if it works.

In the old diesels, idi, 12v's, and such, yes you can run old engine oil, however I wouldnt run atf, it will kill your injection pump and injectors, quick.

Motor oil, atf, kerosene, hell even shock oil will run fine just make sure to filter it well. Try to keep it at least half diesel but depending on the mix you can go for more waste products.

FSM for the IDI recommend using ATF to fill the filter when you change the fuel filter. You can really run anything you want though a ford IDI. Vegetable oil works also.

Just make sure whatever you are using is filtered. Little bitty metal particles in the oil will creak havoc on the injectors and pump. I think the WVO folks use a 15 micro filter.

I've run just about everything in my IDI, used ATF, motor oil, veggie oil, usually a bit of diesel in one tank for starting / stopping, then more oil than diesel mixed in the second tank. I usually pre-filter stuff through denim before it goes in the tank and just carry an extra fuel filter, rags, and some hand cleaner:flipoff2: but it's not my daily driver anymore. Technically it would be better to heat the oil to 150* or 180* (I don't recall exactly) for a cleaner burn and to reduce coking.

where would one find the 15 micro filters?

and i was just going to put a few gallons in per every 50 just to ease up my stockpile of oil in my shop.

90 wt gear oil a little to thick to burn?

I would stay away from gear oil. If you really had to maybe mix with some gasoline... but I would not do that unless in an "oh shit" scenario. Check out ebay for some sock filters. You can do better than 15 microns. There are vendors out there but ebay is usually cheaper. just using a t-shirt will be about 15 microns.

Careful about the ATF in the fuel - the red color could get you in trouble if they're doing checks for non-taxed fuels on road.

A lot of the OTR fleets use a system that has an oil reservoir. Every so many hours it pulls several quarts of oil out of the system and dumps it in the fuel tank and then dumps the same amount from the reservoir into the system. Then all they do is change the filters.

Definitely filter the oil before adding it to the fuel. You can find Racor systems in 2, 10, and 30 microns pretty regularly on eBay. Would be easy enough to set up a gravity flow system through one of those to "convert" your oil for use. Just get one rated for diesel instead of the gasoline versions.

about the atf color... I think they are actually checking for a chemical reaction and not just dipping for color but either way you can get in trouble for not paying taxes on "fuel".

pm supervert on this board. he has a barrel with pump and filter assy. i was supposed to get it when i picked up his idi truck, but i think he may be willing to sell it. it is a slick setup, i just decided not to run wmo (waste motor oil) .also i think you want a 2 or 3 micron filter not 15.

I just 'processed' 10 gallons of waste oil/atf/etc last night in my garage.

I bought some 2 micron sock filters off ebay, they are about 8" x 18" with a strap sewn on the top to hang them off something. Last night I had a broken axle shaft stuck in the vice, the sock filter hanging off that, a 5 gallon bucket under it. Pour old oil in the top, do something else for a while, come back, pour in some more, repeat. Then it goes in the truck 5 gallons at a time.

I run this all through my 12V Dodge. I've probably run 40-50 gallon in the last year or so. I've gone as thick as 50% oil/diesel - it gets kind of smoky when it is cold, but once it warms up it burns clean. I try and stay at 10-20%.

All my oil changes go right back in the tank and I get a few gallons once in a while from a buddy.

Also for those interested... I might have a 6.9 IDI engine (and rebuilt trans and t-case) for sale in the classifieds. good engine for burning everything.

As for the ATF, they'll test the fuel but usually the first sign is the color. If it doesn't pass the visual they pull you out of line and go over everything. If you pass the visual usually they don't bother with anything more and you're on your way.

The fleet system you mentioned is Cummin's Centinel system. The general description you gave of it's function is correct. It came in two versions....one with a makeup tank full of fresh oil for otr trucks and one without for local based units where crankcase oil could be easily topped off daily.

The company I work for ran this system from 2000 till 2005 when we started having problems with the new ISX's wasting bearings from the dirty oil and system overfilling the crankcase constantly. I'm can't remember what year it was actually introduced but the add-on kit with standalone ecu box can be fitted to any electronic engine that has the standard 6-pin Deutch datalink connector regardless of brand. The system was discontinued prior to the release of the new DPF equipped engines as it no longer is EPA approved for use in these engines.

All I have ever seen them use is test strips they dip into the tank, they don't look for color. The red dye is there for you to distinguish the difference, not them.

I THINK that newer diesels have a sensor that can "see" the fuel in the lines and if it cannot see through it will throw codes or not work... so alternative fuels might not be good for those. Also the newer diesels are more sensative to spray pattern and might not work as well. I think if the fuels are heated to a viscocity similar to diesel, it might work alright.

Depends on the mixture. Lotsa guys burn off their oil changes, one gallon at a time. Might as well right? Clean filtered motor oil mixed with the other 25-35 gallons of diesel fuel is very diluted.
