This is kind of an engine swap question.

If I were to get a '91 or newer YJ, cheep of course, would there be any value in buying it, pulling the motor, rebuilding it, sticking it in my '85 CJ-7 then parting out the rest of the YJ to recoup my costs?

Allow me to explain. My 258 has 120k miles on it and is blowing a lot of smoke. It's going to need a rebuild or replacement soon. I've been considering all my engine rebuild or replacement options. The easiest (most exspensive) would be to rebuild the 258 and get the Mopar Injection kit. (Did I mention I really want to get fuel injection.) That way, everything that came out of the engine compartment will fit neetly back in place. Many others suggest Cheby 350 engine replacment. Although I can't help but think it would be easier installing another straight 6 Jeep motor.

Never let the smoke it. Things stop working when you let the smoke out.

well if a straight 6 was in there then that would be the easiest to replace obviously.as for gettin a yj just for the engine,do it and sell the rest of it to me <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> or atleast the frame <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Check with junkyards in your area. Cherokees are starting to show up in other yards besides j & w. Get the motor (4.0 L),wiring harness, computer and you are set. Then your are looking at anywhere from a grand to 1500 dollars. You get a great motor and it will cost you less than the Mopar FI by itself. Just get one that has a lot of compression left and your good to go. Also look for one out of a 91 or newer, less miles and a better fuel injection system. Those motors are usually good for 200,000 miles or better. My buddy's girlfriend has a cherokee with 170,000 hard miles and it still runs strong and doesnt use any oil. Good luck.

I just went threw the same situation. I have a 90 YJ 258 and the motor was very worn. I want fuel injection also. For the cost of rebuilding my 258 and adding fuel inj. I came out better swapping in a 4.0. I got a 4.0 from a junkyard with 30K miles out of a 97 Cherokee for $1500. that was for everything. call Hesco for the wiring harness and computer. It is real sweet and easy. I think both comp. and harness was $600 and He sold me a speed sensor for the t case. You will also have to buy a kit for the Crankshaft Pos. Sensor to relocate it on the harmonic balancer. Rig you up a fuel pump and hook up the starter and alternator and you are running. I love my 4.0, plenty of power and I love the F.I.
