my truck is a 92 w/22re

truck is not running, it will run, but had a HORRIBLE knock, its not the timing chain or guides, its not the timing, i revved it hard one night stuck and it developed the knock, anyway i dont know if its a head problem or a rod knock or bad piston or whatever,

so i am taking the head off first to see, in the process i took out the thermostat while removing the intake and stuff, and under the t-stat was a peice of metal in the coolant, kinda like a shaving of metal, like a ribbon? any ideas where this came from? what is this?

Water pump. The Bearings may have gone out, letting the impeller shave aluminum off of the timing cover.
