Differentials
Non-trd
In the past this diff has also been mistakenly called an 8.4" or 8.25" diff. The ring gear actually measures 8", but it is not compatible with the older 8" diffs at all. The extra strength of this diff comes from the bearing cap/truss and large diameter pinion gear shaft.

Trd (elocker)
A factory option on 3rd Gen. 4Runners, Tacoma 4x4's, and Tacoma PreRunner 4x2's is an electric locking rear differential. This diff is a 4-pinon design based on the Turbo/V6 8" diff and uses the same gear sets.
These locking diffs can be retrofitted into 8" diff axles if the axle housing is modified . It cannot be easily retrofitted into a T100/Tundra or open-diff Tacoma style axle housing because the mounting bolt pattern is smaller. It "could" be done by an axle builder by doing major work to the mounting flange, but that is not really a practical option.

Ok well if anyone can think of some good links to add or sections post up. Later on I will have the mod delete the post after I add the stuff. No bitching about what companies are added. Don't care if you hate one company if they offer the product let the reader decide which company to go with.

It'd be nice to know what 3rd fits in a 96+ 4runner. Is it a traditional 8" or a taco 3rd?

The non-trd Tacoma rear end is not an 8" at all. Or at least mine wasn't NOTHING measured up the same. It is like everything is sized up. The ring gear, carrier etc. are a larger diameter in addition to the bearing cap trusses. The bolt pattern of the third member is even larger as are the bolts for it. The only things that match up are the splines still being 30 spline, and the pinion flange. I don't know where the 8.4" thing came from, but the OD of my non-trd Tacoma ring gear was 8.875" if I remember correctly.

I got a bit familiar with this as I wanted a locker for my 4cyl long before aftermarket options were an option, so I bought a trd housing and 3rd, and fitted it up to my stock axles and brakes. It's not as simple as it sounds, but nothing ever is. But I got a pretty durn good side by side comparison.

Great collection of information! :)
