Please help Toyota 22re

Hi, I have searched and searched for what is wrong with my little Toyota and any help would be greatly appreciated. I even joined this forum for help so I could personally relay my issues to people who know more than me.

So, I have a 22re 2x4 truck. I have been having issues for a long time but it's not an all the time issue but I know something is wrong. Here is what's happening.
The truck usually cranks up on a dime perfect EXCEPT when the weather outside is warm. If it's cold, usually no problem but when it's warm or especially hot, it has a really rough start. It nearly hits but if it misses that first turn(which on hot days it always does) then you have to wind the motor for about 6 seconds before it roughly catches&runs and I ALWAYS smell gas when I crank it. But once it's cranked it will crank up quick again if I turn it off however sometimes I hear a loud noise that almost sounds like an air burst, it idles down when it does then catches and does fine again. When I'm driving it runs A-OK. But when the engine is hot and I sit or turn it off to crank it up again the idle is noticeably rougher. Once, I went to the store&it had a VERY bad hard start and it actually blew the muffler up.(yeah that was actually kinda funny afterwards from the crowd reactions)
It did finally throw a "lean fuel" code but it went away not long after. The gas mileage went from 26 to 14 and the engine doesn't seem to get to normal operating temperature like it used to and weirdly if I put the inside thermostat on hot the engine temp goes up a little but still never comes close to half way marker.
I've checked the MAF sensor, the EGR valve, the Fuel Regulator, the vacuum lines. Ive installed new plugs&wires, tried injector cleaner, new distributor cap, patched an exhaust leak next to the O2 sensor(which is relatively new and it does have ohms with the volt meter but possible it could have went bad during the year I drove with the bad exhause leak next to it I guess).
Please help me if you can. I would be truly grateful.

My starting points could be ecu/ ecm whichever applies. Then I would be looking at heads possibly injectors, probably not though. Maybe piston rings and or needing a complete tear down and rebuild. I'm no expert but that's where I would start. Easy trouble shooting to start with would be fuel pressure tester, and oil pressure tester. Quality manual gages help, but harbor freight gages can work if you have something reliable to compare to. Fog machine maybe to test for any intake/ vacuum leaks.

Thank you sir I rly appreciate your advice.
I actually forgot one other thing that I noticed has been happening whenever I drive to the store, cut the engine off and then when I restart it to leave the engine cranks but goes down and I hear a "SHHHH" sound(best example of the sound can be like shushing someone really loud or maybe a deer blowing when they see you). It happens once or twice with the sound and the engine idle lowering but then it sorts itself out and stops. I have no idea what that could be but it does sound like air blowing. Any ideas on what could cause that???
Check your coolant sensors,
Sounds like it doesn't know it's gotten hot and floods out trying a "cold start". ECU would have no clue where timing and fuel should be at....

Thank you sir. I actually swapped out a new coolant temp sensor a while back thinking that was it but no dice:( I'm thinking about trying to check the ohms for it just in case to make double sure that sensor wasn't a dud. I did order a new PCV valve to try. I'm just running out of things to throw at it that isn't something big. I did order some new injectors but am hoping I don't have to install them cause it's quite a job. If it's not the sensors or the PCV do you know anything else that I could try to check or replace before I go into the big thing I am dreading?? Thank you very very much for your time and help!
I would check the mass air sensor. Coolant sensor air temp sensor, etc... Check fuel pressure, fuel filter..O2 sensors... Vacuum lines...inspect everything...sadly it's a diagnostic...it's a process ..
Get a book for that year/model. It helps.
