Thanks Andy! I will be the Loon lake crew leader as I was last year, so I am inviting all of you guys to work with my crew once again since last year we did such a good job together! I figure 2 groups of about 15 or so for the slabs, this will include trash detail, oil spill clean up, paint removal, and some bypass repairs. The sign up form is just a geniric form to get an idea once again of how many people plan to attend. WE will meet at Loon spill way at around 8am Sat morning like last year. If you plan to work at Spider lake, you'll need to go in Friday night or before 8am Sat.

Andy, hows that sand blaster looking?

Jeff - my local place does not rent them out anymore - I called a couple of other places and the rental fee was high ($500), as they are industrial type units. If anyone knows of a place to rent small gas powered sand blaster units, please let me know.

Some other thoughts are - some folks might have small home sand blaster units and on-board air (we have a Home Depot sand blaster that we can use with our CO2 tank). or what about a gas powered power washer (but where would we get water??). Also, what about using a paint remover like Jasco? - but being very careful and sweeping-up the residue. The Rangers may not be too keen on that one.

As many will know, last year when we tried wire brushes it just did not phase the paint - it was real hard work! We wound up trying to chip the paint off with hammers - not easy either. As a means of reducing the need for sand, it would be an idea to make some form of shroud to "capture" the sand and re-use it.

Any ideas welcome.

I think the sand blaster is the way to go for sure, keep in mind that we tried muratic acid to, and that did'nt work either.

Hey guys, instead of sand blasting the stuff, why don't we get some of that "granite" spray paint? It would be MUCH easier, and it'll blend right in with the slabs....

Howdy all. I will be there again. Plan on spending saturday night at the box and head back out on Sunday morn. Hope the weather isn't like it was last year!! Someone mentioned before about using granite colored paint to cover the red and green arrows on the rocks. Still can't believe someone would paint the rocks. <IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0">

Sandblaster?? Doesn't Walmart sell that little nozzle that you can just stick into a bag of sand and use an air source, onboard? The thing is really cheap also, $40? Just bring the sand, hose and go for it.
No reason why couldn't work.

granite is an option for sure, we talked about that after last years defeat!

The problem with the portable blasters is that you need a butt load of CFM to run those, and as bad ass is most Yorks are, I have doubts that they would get the job done. I could be wrong though.

Yeah, Lance, I have heard that - in fact some felt it was a prefered method, rather than "artificially" eroding the granite. I gotta say that the relative small area affected would not be a big deal, tho. If anyone has recommendations on where to get granite paint send the info my way. BTW - we may have to check with the Rangers - they often have their own ideas, and we have to keep them in the loop. Maybe they have a solution - got a contact Lance/Jeff??

Bill - I have one of those Home Depot sand blasters (the $40 special!!) - I am curious how long my fully charged 20lb CO2 tank will last. Another thought occurs to me - are there small gas powered compressors? I could rent one. Hmmm.......

I think a york can do it but only when ran through a tank with a preasure swich , a good size tank. Otherwise I agree, it wouldnt keep up. a gas powered comp would be the shit.
I think you would empty a co2 bottle in a hury. even when using a small sand blaster its like having a wide open airline. the air just dumps.

I can try and score a gas powered comp from work but it will be tuff sneeking it out in my pants <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

Krusty, I will get intouch with dave Boyer (USFS), I doubt he'll like the paint idea but we'll see. The sand blasters will probably work with yorks and large storage tanks.

Dustin, a trailer is always a plus with the clean ups since we never seem to have enough room to carry out all the trash we collect!

Tools needed if on my crew: gloves, shovels, a few prey bars for whole group, and other crap I can't think of now!

We always need bags, we always seem to get more than enough, but it does'nt hurt to bring extra. The last few years we've got large Cal-Trans bags from Brian (flashlightman) and Brandon.

Shirts: I will have them at registration, and so will the Spider lake registration, first come first serve, no pre-orders. I also plan on having a couple other goodies to sell at the clean up (I'm not gonna tell though!)

Check out the registration page often as it has and will be changing often as we get more details. Lance already made changes to it tonight. If your planning on working on my crew, please sign up for Loon lake/trash detail.

One last thing, does anyone here work for a hardware type store that sells plastic (large trash cans? Our club need new ones for the clean up to place around the sluice box for the weekend. I was thinking of getting a few donated for the clean up cause. If not no biggie, I will just buy some, but I need to get them soon so that I can have the logo put on them. Thanks,
