My 86 4Runner/22RE recently developed a bottom end noise. It is not a rod bearing noise. It could be a main bearing, but doesn't sound right. Noise also goes away when I increase the RPM's.
I can push/pull the harmonic pulley, but I don't know how much should be expected.

Could I have a bad thrust bearing? I've been working around cars and trucks for 30 years and I've never seen a bad thrust bearing. So I don't know how these would sound, so does anyone have a personal account?

Any help would be great!!!

Thanks!

yikes! If you do have a bad thrust bearing it would probably make the most noise when you step on the clutch. When you depress the pedal it pushes the crank forward and you will see the crank pulley move . If you think that is what it is be prepared to get a new block because more than likely the crank and thrust bearing surfaces are wasted.
