I'm reading through my manual for the 2002 CTD RAM, and it says that *any* towing falls under severe service and requires the rear axle fluid to be changed every 12k miles. Is this unreasonable? Do other manufacturers have similar (aggressive) service intervals?

If I don't tow, the service interval is infinite/never.

Share yours, and as much as I'm interested in all your personal habits, please stick to what's recommended by your manufacturer not just what you practice.

I read your post and got a little concerned because I put synthetic in my rear end (the trucks rear) at 20k and still have it in at 55k. I pulled out the factory repair manual for 01 and it sayes change rear lube at 12k if you tow "frequently". WTF they call frequently I have no idea. 12k seems a little unreasonable though.
