Power steering gear box?

1086 Views 14 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  rotozuk
I plan on running 38/12.50/15 TSL's and am going to run a coil set up. Anyone give me a list of boxes that would turn the tires easy and has a pitman arm in the front? I know scout boxes do, but they are obviously hard to come by. I also hear the trooper boxes do but I don't know anyone who has tried them. I think the fj60 boxes do but they are hard to come by as well. Any others that people have used? I don't want to run a toy box cause it will hit the coils unless I stick it way the hell out there and I don't want a box sitting out in front of the frame rails. I'm running highsteer on toy axles. thanks

Obviously hard to come by? Obviously you have not even tried to look. I had no problems finding mine. Infact, I found one at every junk yard I called that deals with such parts. all had a very fair price compared to the other popular boxes.

By the way, another possible doner is the F350 (or was it the 250?).

The Saginaw has many advantages over the Jap stuff.
1) They are cheaper. A lot cheaper!
2) They are stronger. Just look at that sector shaft!
3) Huge selection of pitman arms. (just about anything american made has a pitman arm that will fit any other Saginaw box.
4) Parts are easy to come by, and cheap. (If you should need any.)

Oh yeah, one more.. You can actually buy new steering linkages that fit. And with a little luck, turn big tires without the need for hydro boosting. Hell, you could probably buy a new one for less than a used FJ80 box!

Well I guess I'll just keep checking around on the scout boxes then. Anyone got a write up on using them?
Try the bottom half of this page.

And the finished install looks like this:

I think I'm gunna have to get a box that mounts on the inside of the frame rail cause I'm outboarding the coil springs to keep the vehicle low. Thanks anyway.
You will probably be better off with one that has a rear facing pitman arm. Just keep a close eye on clearance issues. The boxes can really get in the way of many things depending on the design of the box. The key items to consider are you engine manifolds, radiator, shocks, springs. Also make sure you will be able to hook up to the steering shaft.

Each project will have its own considerations, and the big Saginaw may not be the right fit for many.
