Pretty basic Golden Eagle

21132 Views 86 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  Tacedaddy

saw this sitting in a farmers field near my house. A fairly molested 78 Golden eagle 304 3 speed d20 with a broken output shaft "non running" for 300 bucks. Drug it home and got it going in about 10 minutes

IT was full of 1980's goodies dual shocks, dual steering stabilizers, lots of rust in the body but someone had already repaired and coated the frame

I yanked the tub off and tore my 2wd T18 i stole from another farmer down the road and bolted a novak adapter up

my other buddy pulled his YJ tub off his junk so i got it for free, had a friend swing by and we started adding some patch panels

getting the wiring sorted... ordered about 800 dollars worth of odds and ends to try to get this thing moving
maybe its because it was my job for so many years all across the country but i love wiring

I ran the el-cheapo speedway 12 circuit harness and just adapted it to my setup, it was nice to not have to start from scratch

getting the intermediate wipers working has been kinda fun too

What is wrong about the fuel pump?
looking good

good move on the boat sides
I have yj that has fucked up floors and rockers
its getting all cut out and instead of patching ill replace it with boat sides

on side note my cj had as much bondo as yours and I think lot of it was from factory :flipoff2:

The Billet aluminum bracket that holds the pump is wider than the framerail, I welded a tab to the top of the frame to bolt it through but i doubt without the 1" body lift that it would work... I almost just had my machine shop guys make me a new bracket.

HAHA thanks im still blowing bondo dust out of my nose :homer:

I"m gonna work on the cherokee a bit this weekend and get it ready, wheeling season is here and I need a break from this daily CJ grind
had a bunch of parts show up

I went to cut the hole for the fuel door in the side of the tub and it started raining, and then the grinder wheel exploded, luckily i just bought that new dewalt and it still had the gaurd on it. So it looks like ill be inside this weekend enjoying the weather

Here ill post my ridiculous power steering reservoir i came up with.. I have a couple buddies that were bored at the machine shop so they custom engraved it just for me
:smokin:

I cant complain i etched penis's into his wheel spacers so i suppose i deserve it
none of the fittings are screwed in all the way i still gotta prime and paint it

and i grenaded my XJ's T-case i believe, I have no 4hi it just grinds alot, linkage is tight im not sure whats going on but at least i have 4Lo

the CJ got a JK fuel door :homer: , and some SH*tybuilt TJ flares that i shortened due to the boatsides (they are only bolted on so i dont get pulled over (va only cares about tire coverage)

so i ground down and welded the crappy fender flares seams.... i should have just bent my own like the fronts but whatever
and my battery box is here, kinda stoked on how fast ballistic is shipping stuff these days, way better than years past

so today was the most rewarding and most frustrating days ever

I mounted the battery box, tidied up the fuel fill and vent lines and turned the key on my 3 year project for the first time

the ECU fired right up and I setup the FI-tech for the 304 and mild cam, the fuel pump primed, i turn the key to start and the starter solenoid CLICKED loudly and NOTHING

the freaking reman starter that came on the jeep, the ONE damn part i didnt replace because it looked brand new is shot

guess ill try again tomorrow.......

here are some pictures of how it sits

i think im gonna name it peaches

Glad to see it coming along. I bit the bullet on the FITech 400 hp kit also - was down at Uwharrie last weekend and had carb problems for the very last time! I got the TB installed on my 350 powered CJ5 and am doing the wiring and fuel system plumbing this weekend. I'm optimistic, certainly can't run any worse than a carb and if it works out well I'll probably get one for my 304 Scrambler too.
I actually got the CJ started for about 10 seconds yesterday till i realized i hadnt tightened a fitting on the hydroboost... SO its alive and im happy

BUT i needed some motivation so i took the cherokee to a local event and beat the crap out of it and..... didnt break a thing, the wife is happy lol

^ right after this was taken that right rear wheel ended up about 4 feet off the ground... kinda liked hearing the crowd cheer :grinpimp:

even went and ran backwards through the rockpile after the even was winding down
then drove home at 75 MPH.... i dont need no stinking trailer

Update:
I sold our house moved everything we own into a storage unit and a building I put up out on our land. Im neck deep in building a new house but i drug the CJ over to a buddies house and literally didnt touch it till last week

It would not start PERIOD.. no fuel pressure at all so i ordered a bosch 044 pump because it held up well on my E30 and would be complete overkill, slapped it on and SHE's ALIVE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F10FD_R44fs

sidenote FI-techs pump seemed to be high quality idk if it took too long to prime and i killed it or what but having the digital display is so handy and im still happy with my purchase, but i think i would skip buying their pump setup and buy the 044 pump and a filter and roll if i did it again

ALSO F- photobucket i had to re-host my entire post

I have been working non-stop on the CJ this winter and building our house, I have an event im registered for so i have till the end of april to knock this thing out. I drove it for the first time and its fantastically scary with 0PSI in the tires

made a cage kit thing copied BTF's basically but retained my ebrake and oh sh!t handle and threw some e30 seats in it

then Finished all the wiring for the wipers and spent three weekend straight wiring the dash and accessories

I had an idea for my front turn signals, being a transit tech i deal with busses alot and we've been using these lights in the shop so i figured what the heck, lets stick with my theme of flush mounting everything

cut the little bevel off the steel 1/4-20 clips and slid them on the lights

then drilled some holes and mounted them, spaced them 1/4" in the grill just because

my front seal is leaking on the d300.. of course after i bolted up the front DS. and i noticed i've got a broken stud on it i dont know how that happened but hopefully i can back it out with and easy out i dont really wanna pull this case again

Got the taurus fan in and wiring run for the relays. Im liking the FI-techs fan circuitry and being able to dial in where i have it turn on.

still got a ton of looming to do but i also went and put a washer fluid reservoir in it. I saw it on the part store shelf and said what the hell for 20 bucks ill have a clean window

Nice work. You shooting to make Ice Breaker at the Cove?
If i hadnt gotten a spot at Wheelin for hope at oakridge i would, im supposed to do that on April 27-29 Then Chaos May 18th

On top of that, we're moving in to the new house in a few weeks.

I dont know why but i just spent 6 hrs doing body work on this stupid thing, at least it will look nice for a little while
finally cycled the suspension and reset my front shocks i have about 1/2" of clearance with the steering box as it cycles but at least they aren't goofy inverted things anymore.

i cant wait for my house and new shop to be done, im thankful my buddy let me stash my junk at his place but not having all my tools organized is killing me

I drove it down to the gas station with the temp tags and got followed by a cop but he gave me a thumbs up :flipoff2:
Its surprisingly stable

SO i've been waiting for a 60*+ day to start painting

In the mean time, still doing body work and had an interesting idea for a center console, I think its going to turn out slick and give me a spot to hide CB stuff and some cup holders

Gotta bend and cut up some aluminum now to panel it and do some upholstery for the top

"someone" took a spy shot of me doing body work

still waiting on a warm day to paint this thing... we got 12" of snow yesterday so today I kept up my theme of little stupid projects and built a cover/trunk/place to keep my spare tire, and made a start on a skid plate

1x1 square tube frame and an 1/8" sheet broke 1" on either side.... gotta pick up a piano hinge and latch so it locks to the tailgate. I guess its kind of a tonneau cover, i know....lame

heres the bottom of the little cover before i cut the other two braces and welded it up

and i got some sweet Chinese 35W marine speakers... i had to buy 6 but for 18.00 im not mad. I will probably just run a high pass filter to two of them and throw two 6x9's in the front of the rear deck facing the back of the seats

I don’t know if it’s just me but most of the pics aren’t working. Wanted to check out how you did your headlights again. I gotta do that to mine, it looks way too cool
