1998 Dodge 2400
Cummins Turbo Diesel
4x4
auto tranny
single rear wheel
extra cab style (rear backwards doors)
red exterior
grey interior
273,000 miles

Wife just saw it - said the interior and exterior is immaculate.

Asking price at the dealership is $12,900 (that usually means there is some room to negotiate)

I may go look at this one after work - so speedy opinions are appreciated :)

Sounds a bit high for that type of mileage, but it is a newer truck.
Have you compared the prices to ebay, auto trader, etc?

I did not know whether it was a 12v or 24v from my wife's description - but ran both through www.kbb.com and retail used price was listed as $15,565

I was surprised when Mrs. DRM said it was as nice and clean as she did - she was REALLY impressed with it. Remember - she drives a loaded 2000 CC SuperDuty w/leather, so her idea of "super clean" is not a worn out daily driver :p

Well if they want 12,900, then they got probably in something like that, maybe 8000. I have three good friends in the bussiness and typically they trade so they can mark up by 5000 grand or so, and there is alot of room.

Is it a regular cab? Or club cab? Or quad cab? If its a quad cab, here a truck like that is worth about 10-11 grand retail.
Sorry about that - it is an extra cab with the rear backward doors - definately worth more than the std. cabs.

a 12 valve 98 is worth more than a 24v 98 by about 1 grand. it still seems a bit steep, i would think top dollar would be in the 9500 range. if it is a 24v, but i would not by a 24 valve truck for that kind of money. the 12v are much more reliable in the injector pump and lift pump department. and the 12v are much easier to get big power gains from cheap.

also for that kind of mileage you are looking at paying cash for it, as banks won't touch it to finance it. :D

I saw a similar deal here in town a while back. A 2000 with 200k on it. $13 out the door was the best I could talk the guy into. I passed on it, as it wasn't as clean as what you are discribing. :D

just got off the phone with him and he told me they are asking 9500 for it and it does sound like a 12 valve from his description.

The Bad:

Looks like the hood has some hail damage (slight depressions all over) but not on the top of the cab. Hard to see - only noticed it 'cause driving at night you see the glare.

Grill is loose

Pass. side "touch" interior light does not work

temperature guage never moved - and there was a "check guages" light that was on when first started, then went off.

The Good:

receipt in the console said the dealership put new brake pads and U joints on the front last month.

Another receipt says Aamco rebuilt the tranny on 2/10/03 (BTW: mileage was 238k in February - the guy drove a LOT!)

Anyway - $10k out the door (talked the truck price down to $9,100) :cool2:

Build date is 10/97 BTW

you buy it?

Those "bads" are nothing
Yep :)

$9100, taxes and all came to $10k.

Finding the tranny receipt from February was VERY reassuring to say the least :)

Evidently the owner was a local - ge was a sunglasses distributor and pulled a small cargo trailer full of sunglasses around the country. Like I said - he put over 20k miles on it from February till October of this year alone!

I will get pics this weekend since it is dark out when I leave in the morning and dark whemn I get home :(

Really happy - now we gotta find something in the $10k or less range for Kate to trade the SuperDuty in on, and get my 4Runner sold!

That should be a 12v. In the middle of the vin there should be a number sequence its either 23D or 236. If its a D that means its a 12v.:bounce2:

23D ;)

That may be normal. I know my old 2001 and my new :D 2003 's temp gage go up slow. They seem to run cool.

How long of a drive and how cold was it ?

Did you get some kind of warranty (sp ?) ?

Take it somewhere to see if there are any codes in the computer.
