93 SAS VW turbo diesel

THIS PROJECT HAS CHANGED- page 5

Well I gave in and decided to join the forum and post my built for constructive Criticism. please let me know your thoughts and ideas. I guess i should say at this time that i do frame repair in the collision repair industry on 90% toyota. So most of the body work stuff is an everyday thing to me. but im new to everything else in terms 4x4 fabrication. My start of this project started with the ^[email protected]#$*& gas prices. At the time i decided to take on this masive task of the buildup, i owned a gas gulping 5.2l Grand Cherokee Limited. I loved the vehicle expecialy the interior but hated the fuel economy 11.2mpg with my foot. So i decided i needed a economic, reliable 4x4. If you look around in the light truck market their are no diesels, namely YOU TOYOTA (GET ON IT). so easy solution build the truck you want heres the plans. at some point i will post my research bookmarks on all the info that helped me the most. All i can say is research the %^#* out of every aspect of your build. And be comfortable with each section before you start. FORUMS ARE GOLD

1993 toyota pickup ext cab
-2wd reinforced frame
-4runner rear axle
-solid front axle
-VW TDI/IDI 1.9l turbo diesel
-bob bed
-grand cherokee seats
-acme adapters adapter plate (Thanks Jeff)
-w56 tranny with gear driven transfer case
I will expand this list some day because its LONG

lol so what you working with? im guessing its a toyota :D. does it have a engine :flipoff2: any spec aleast :shaking:

1990 gmc 1500 2wd rear leafs



thank the technology gods for the plasma cutter

3.5 inch 1/4 wall square tubing cut to make spring hangers

yes yes i know the rear shackles, dont worry im moving the hanger back and making thicker shackles

about 4 inches cut off and 2x4inch x 1/4 wall(i know thats a heavy peice, its for towing) new cross member with the old one removed.



DONT SAY SHACKLE ANGLE!! its not done

dont get mad 22re lovers. their just not my thing. gonna go diesel, not the head cracking toyota 4cyl diesels. looks like it would fit a vw tdi quite nicely

The bed bob the quesion of how much to take out depended on the rear cross member placment. it ended up being 8inches



a few cut off wheels and some spare time







make a 1 1/2inch wide strip of the scrap and tack it together untill i get tilme to weld it completly and do the body work

Looks like it shoud be a pretty sweet rig when it's done. The only thing i notices was the shackle straps seemed pretty then:confused:. We could also use a spec list 2.:flipoff2:

ADAPTER PLATE

Today I recived my adapter plate from www.acmeadapters.com. What a quality piece of metal. When i first started this project i had planned on making my own adapter plate but because of time and the need for tolerances to be so tight i decided to purchase a bare bones kit. After looking at the product I'm so glad i bought it rather than make it. their are many small things that would have been a real headache (notice the countersunk alen head bolds). I got my eye on a front axle and engine for next weeks update.

(ps. monster yota, I have no idea what type of cut off tool it is I got it from an old timer in the trade and its unmarked as to the maker)









and the calipers from an the 4runner for the SAS

Went part shopping and got a solid front from a 81 toyota. looks to be in ok condition but needs seals everywhere. and the intercooler from my 240sx.







This should be big enough

Now that the axle is here i will begin to cut the IFS apart.

No gusseting on the 81 axle at all

From what I understand the lift companies try and duplicate the Toyota factory SAS setup? so in that case why are people not using a sway bar(with quick disconnects for body roll on road). Or this traction bar link?

I know they are just temporary until i move the hanger back a few inches. bought some 1/4 inch do you think that will do it? or should i go get some 3/8? whats your opinion on cross connecting them like this?

I think you would be ok with 1/4 straps for the shackles. As far as the track bar they don't use it cause it LIMITS the flex. For that little of a diesel and given the room you have you should be fine with the intercooler off the the SX. Your build up's coming along nice, keep it up.

The toque rod is only needed when using the stock push-pull steering, so that when you hit the brakes the axle wont roll under the truck and steer it into other lanes of traffic.
