Questions about Chevy springs.
Ok I did search but nothing answered my questions.
Here they are:
1. Can I use my stock u-bolts and stock spring plates?
2. Can I leave the shocks in factory position?
3. And where is the ideal place to put the front hanger? Some put it 11",11.5" or 12"
4. Can I still carry heavy loads with these springs?

Thanks.

Hey Newbie, why don't you first tell us what kind of truck it's going on? Without knowing that, no one can give you good answers. I can give you generic ones though based on an 85 Runner:
1. No.
2. No. Why do the Chevy's if you want the shocks to limit their flex?
3. I put mine 11.5" forward, drop a plumb line from the centerline of where yours is now and then determine how far forward it needs to go.
4. Yes, especially if it has the overload.

First off, and I know this sounds repetative, but do a search! There have been so many posts on this. To answer your questions, 1. I believe the stock u-bolts and plates can be used, but the Chevy's are just a little too wide, so the leafs have to be ground down a little for fitment. I am currently collecting parts for the same swap, and opted to get a u-bolt flip while I'm at it. 2. If the factory u-bolts/spring plates are used, the factory mounts can be utilized for shocks, just use a longer shock, of course. I am going to angle my shocks inward (/\), it doesn't cost that much. If your fabrication skills are limited, just take your junk to a welder and have them weld some shock mounts on for you. It couldn't cost that much (this is what I will have to do since I don't know how to weld very good). 3. I believe the front hanger is moved forward 11.5", but do what Pmurf said and do a plumb bob. That will ensure accuracy. 4. Remember, these springs came off of 1/2 ton trucks, they can support a decent load. FYI, I am putting a Pro Comp add-a-leaf on mine, and hopefully the rest of the lift can be made up with longer shackles. Good luck. Let us know when you finish, we wanna see it!

Ok thanks guys for the replies they really help. I will keep you posted on the project with lots of pics.
I have an 86 Toyota 4x4. I don't want any lift just stock height. I have no lift in the front.
crawlytoy, if you read my post closely I said I did a search first.

I just did my swap last weekend.... here's the specs.....
I located the front hanger 11" forward of the toyota hanger (tire sits dead center when it's stuffed in the fender well...)

I relocated my shocks inward in the triangle formation and went to rancho 5010's (11" of travel)This required welding new mounts on to the axle and to the round x-member on the frame......

I used the factory chevy shackle at the rear and welded another spring hanger just behind the factory toyota hanger. (this way I can cut off the toyota hanger and use it up front for the SAS.....)If I need more lift in the back I'll just get lowering shackles for chevy and bolt em on

I cut off and re-located the brake line bracket so it wouldn't get stretched and break. (extended lines are on the way....)

I used the factory plates and springs but had to remove the overload leaf to get enough thread to show.....

hope this helps....if you have any other questions PM me......

I just get tired of "search don't work" it works, and works great I just copied and pasted those 1st 40 finds on search I used c"chevy springs" and search for exact match, not any match. I have my doughts that some people even do a search..........I love the search, it will often find answers you won't get with another hashed over question, because people get tired of putting up there answer over and over and sometimes will not reply again.

Here's a link to some pics of my 85 that I just finished the swap on. I moved the hanger 11.5" forward and used a 3" extended shackle in the rear. Using an extended shackle gives you mad droop and you don't have to move the rear hanger. I used 3/8" plate and 5/8" bolts for the ubolt flip, with 9012s mounted inward /\.

Don't flame my truck too hard, 35 MTRs and a soft top coming soon

Thanks.... Rust sucks! The other side is rotted exactly the same way. I want to tub it eventually, about 1" down from the wheel well line. The problem with this is the rear seat belt spool is in the way. Anybody have a write up on tubbing these?

Yarddog, Nice yota seems to work well with the chev springs in back. How much will you need to trim front and rear to stuff 35" meats. I also noticed next time you may be leaving the ~top at home~!

Rokcrln, I don't know how much to trim the rear yet, the tires are perfectly centered so I'll have to see. Maybe a little in rear of the wheel well. But when I put the 44044s in, I'm going to redrill the perch 1 1/2" back, that should move the front axle 2.5" forward. I hope that will be enough. The rear is going to be tough because I have the 85 axle and it is pretty narrow. I'm probly looking at major frame rubage on the stuffed tire. Spacers are probly in order for that. Or maybe tub the whole thing out. As for the top it's Can Back time!
