Ram assist continuation (more pics)

So with the 60 series box drilled tapped plumbed, the 75 series high clearance pitman arm fitted, the ram mounted, the 33mm solid tie rods done the FJ80 rod ends, and everything toyota and BEEFED, it should have been all good, the 1.5" ram by 8" stroke

and i took it for a drive, man that toyota pump is UNDER powered, so with the pressure increased marginally i needed to get the revs up to get the benefit of the ram assist and it worked like a champion

until i backed it off the trailer at X-Rock, when the bottom seal in the box blew out, two theories, the most probable being which i had re-assembled it incorrectly, in my late night bootie fabbin, i had stuffed the bottom seal on the sector shaft, or had torn it a little, or grabbed it on the lip as i dropped the shaft in place either way it held up for about 20mins of driving, and me testing it into huge rocks and stuff at work, before they asked me to get out of the garden and go play elsewhere!

ANYWAYS the bottom line is we had to convert it back to normal power steering before scrutineering as it wouldnt pass with that leak, so while i made sure the insurance was good, my pit crew, and myself got it changed over in fifteen minutes, with a nice coating of hydraullic fluid, mainly on me, i passed scrutineering!

WELL here is the real tech
you need to get more fluid, bigger reservoir, and probably a cooler:
the theory behind this is that the box has a small valve, and is now puching twice the fluid past this valve, getting the fluid, hotter, a LOT faster, and needing much more cooling capacity!!
Also the ram stroking back and forth changes the capacity by:
stroke x bore, within your reservoir!

ALSO: for those who have upgraded to saginaw pumps, nice work, that is probably my next plan, in relation to steering, as i have sourced a box and am currently building it into a WEAPON!

Even with experienced help and hours of my time, it still took ages to drill it correctly, and rebuild the entire box, with this style its impossible to keep the shavings out of the box, so it needs to be stripped down :(

Matt H (the lake rat) at west texas offroad helped me out, and if i could say, if his shop was near my place, i would drive it there, and not deal with the headaches, this job is a pain in the a$$ :D

he also sells kits, ready to bolt on, this would be an ideal thing, being that i have right hand drive, i also could not do this!!

but call them at west texas if you need it done, he is the man!!

Wheres the picts. of it installed on your truck...don't dare to show us? :flipoff2:

J/K lets check em' out.:D
I was having issues with the ram touching the frame at full flex (the 42s added weight to the outside of the diffs, just make it go from full droop to bumstop so much easier (i need a fraction longer bumpstops)

the installed pics will be coming, so are the dual married H41 pics :D

this is FJ60/HJ60 power steering fitted to an FJ40/BJ42 thoough!!
although it will give the wagon guys some ideas!
Cool, I'll we waiting for the picts.:p

i will paint the fence tonight, so maybe later in the week!
where's the pix
Yeah, lets check em' out bootie boy.;)
Are you running the 2 f or diesel?
I have installed a bunch of Saginaw pumps on the 2f's and it will fix your problems. Coolers are common in the boneyards on Ford FWD cars you got Taurus' over there? They have a nice one.

hey frenchy, i dug up those spider gears to send to you :flipoff2: :flipoff2: now track down my mogs, and ill send some locking hubs aswell :flipoff2:
As uper cheap tranny cooler works very well :)

That is what I run. and I never have had a problem with overheating of fluid.
thanks jason, i will keep my eyes open!!

Oh yeah :D
I've been a bit busy these days with work, now I have 2 days off and am going skiing :D :flipoff2:

I'll sort it out, bro ;)

Bye,
well im going to try and tap mine today.did any of yall do any kind of pump volume or pressure upgrade?
you need to strip the box down and re-assembly is hard and messy (was for me as ive never done it before)

i tried to do a pressure and flow upgrade BUT never tested it on a flowmeter, or got anything on pressures or flow rates done, but rest assured, as soon as i get the hookup for the flowmeter the gear will be on the bench being tested and ill come back with specs!

well i talked to the lake rat today and we arnt shure whats wrong .might be air in the box causing the fluid to cavitate or my pump might be bad.so i didnt tap the box yet still trying to find out whats wrong with the rest of the ps

ahhhh, he is apparently the guru, so just roll with what he says, did you try what i said?

if the pump is flogged send it to a rebuild shop and have them kit it out for pressure and flow :D
well i think i fixed it today .the box had air in it and was causeing the fluid to cavitate therefore i guess it was starving for fluid. i put a panhard bar on and it made it turn sharper.i went ahead and lowerd the cooler as far down as i could.when i would get off camber or the front up to high i think the fluid would drain back to the pump and over fill the tankond blow it out .but anyway i wheeled it today in low for about 45 min. an it was one finger steering. so thanks for all the help(the lake rat & bj on roids).allen
