some info on the sm 465: looking at the Novak website... the later 4WD tranny's had 32 spline output and the earliers had 10 spline output. The earlier 10 spline is only 2 5/8" long. The later 32 spline outputs look to be at least twice as long (they don't list the length for this output shaft...anyone have one or know for sure). I wonder if there is enough meat on there that you could have this shaft resplined to 10 spline? If I can figure out how to make this combo work it would net around 56:1 before the axles!
I found some Quadratecs in the yard last weekend. Still looking for one in the cheap yards. I have a spare LT230 to play with now just trying to figure out how to make it all work on the cheap. Maybe if I set it all really close together osmosis will take over.
I'm wondering what can be used for the PTO output shaft on a LT230. Ya'll mentioned the Rocky Mountain overdrive. Anyone called them to see if they have parts support or if they will sell the shafts?

From what I heard from him last week he has 3 different ratios...still being tested but close to ready. Has your little birdie confirmed that they are good to go?

Hi,

to clarify a couple of things :

we are busily working away on many new products for the 'Rock Crawling' and 'Challenge' vehicles,

we have 2 new products which will allow lower gearing for the LT 230 transfer case,

we will not be making a 40% lower ratio set,

we will be releasing full details on these 2 new products on 6/6/5 on both our web site and in the LRO Mag July issue,

look forward to discussing any queries on these soon,

Maxi-Drive has new 49% low range gears as well. Pics and specs in the link above.

I just checked and I trashed my SM645 main shaft during the move.
I rebuilt the tranny with a Novak 10 spline shaft so I could mate it to the Dana 18.
Adapter plate is 1" thick. Maybe just get the spec from Novak on their mainshaft.

Why, if you are going to go SM465, dont you just ditch the Rover t-case?

SM465 has a 6.53:1 1st
Dana 18 with new gear 3.13:1
If you have the wheel base you can fit in a gear splitter 1.25:1
Run Series gears and you end up with 120:1 at the axle.
AA still makes the Saturn overdrive for the D-18

All of this has already been done for the Jeep/Scout market, does it really make sense to reinvent the wheel so that you can stick with a Rover t-case?

b/c I paid $20 for a sm465 and I paid $0 for a LT230 (dealer warranty FREEBIE). I can divorce the LT230 if need be. If this crawler box can be done on the cheap, why not? more choices on gear ranges. The Quadratec case can be had for a $100 or less. I'm not keeping the LR axles. I have 8 lug 1-ton Ford van axle for the rear off-set ($29.99 at local Pick-n-pull) a dana 44 front for the same price(looking for that junkyard jewel dana 60 for $300 or less). So far I have around $130 in my drive train. That wouldn't even buy th gear set. That's why. And as long as you build your truck w/ parts people don't want...makes it cheap to fix! :flipoff2: The only thing that will be rover on my SII is the body/frame and trim.

The crawler box will not be a Cheap Bastard option for you.

I believe a crawler box is going to be reintroduced by Ashcroft again.

Resurrection!

PT, where did you leave off with this? Unless you hit a roadblock that renders this mod impossible, Im going to start back up on it.

My buddy is giving me a 1339 low range unit to experiment with. I have an lt230 to throw on the bench and I own a machine shop and have contacts for edm cutting gears.

1339s seem to be pretty scarce these days, but not as scarce as the ashcroft crawl boxes, so if I can make this work, I intend to make plenty more....
