Report Violaters/Abusers HERE!
We're doing our own Rubicon Patrol. Here's where we start.
Report violators/nimcompoops to ME -- Trail Boss, Friends of the Rubicon, and I will pursue follow up. I am working with law enforcement officials on our behalf. The Sheriff folks in Eldorado County are particularly interested in helping us get a volunteer effort underway.

Our Volunteer Trail Patrol idea is not intended to jeopardize our fun (and safety). We will not be enforcing the law. We are merely to educate, observe and report.

If you encounter an obvious lawful violation, and it becomes necessary to report it to law enforcement officials, I need YOU to be able to identify the driver.

YOU need to ask him/her to quit what they're doing (nicely if you feel comfortable doing it). But BE A WITNESS.

Get their plate, vehicle ID as best you can. Keep a note on the description of where, what, etc. And other witnesses if you can.
A digi or regular picture would help me a lot. Write down the names/addresses of other witnesses also.

If you took this same info to the USFS law enforcement folks or the county Sheriff, that'd be GREAT. But if nothing else, send it to me via email and I will stay on top of it and try to get corrective action.

So:
1. Observe
2. Ask them to stop and explain why.
3. Identify the event and driver/rig.
4. Report it to me via email or mail.

For now, EVERYONE who cares is a Rubicon Patrol Volunteer.
Later, I hope to get us some training and ID's, etc.
thanks, Del

Trail Patrol update

We are working with United Four WHeel Drive Association and their Trail Patrol program, which has shirts, booklets, ID's and even training sessions.

Big Rich is our Rubicon Volunteer Trail Patrol Captain. He is working with John Stewart from United to see how this might help our job on the Rubicon.

These are all good ideas. Rich has shirts and ID cards already. Training for us is thru our Rubicon Trail Home Page Trail Patrol information. We don't yet have anything set up for a person to read a booklet or get to a training session; but we're working on it.

For sure I need witnesses.
For sure I need photos (clearly showing the violation).
For sure the driver has to be id'd or shown in the photo.
then we can launch. REMEMBER tho, we would like to EDUCATE first and get folks to realize their mistake and CORRECT it immediately. But if that don't work, we are launching, and the enforcement folks are behind us.

Del we ran into a group this weekend at Fordyce that really needs to have a good talking to. We failed to get a photo of the resource damage, but I can get you photos of the rig and the plates. Let me know if you want the details. We are following up with a few vendors that had there stuff plastered all over the rig as well.

I worked Comittee for the Bear Valley Loop this year, along with two other guys, Dave "GoldRush" and Issaam "Iceman".
We took 25 rigs out on the Loop, none of our group got out-of-line to my knowledge (I took Drag-rig after Iceman had crossmember failure, GoldRush was Lead-rig).
More than a few took the Forestry road out. If they acted up after leaving our tour I don't know that we could have done much to prevent it.

Can you be at all specific as to where you saw, and what?

This should/could have been reported via CB CH20, which was the reserved channel for Sierra Trek communications. CSPR and LE were present at Meadow Lake main camp and response time would have been rather quick.

If these people were attending ST this would have been the best action, as it would probly have resulted in their expulsion from the event...at least a blackeye for them in the presence of their peers, which can be more of a deterrent than fines to some folks.....

they were not part of Sierra Trek. We got word that one of them was cited and arrested at Meadow Lake, but they were still partying it up on Saturday night so I sure dont think it had much effect :(

We were working Winch Hill 3. There were actually 2 incidents. 1 on the trail about 1/2 way between the cutout and Winch Hill 3 and one at the winch hill. The proper authorities are being contacted :p

Oh yeah forgot to add that Winch Hill 5 was the only group that responded to any of our CB contact that night

The problem was at WH3. They were not participating in the run. There was drag people near when it all went down. Hell they almost got in a fight with them. It was ugly. There will be more info posted today.

Thanks,
Bernie

Fordyce trail is on the other side of the area, it had nothing to do with this run.
And unfortunately, we can't do anything as organizers to people that are not with the run, but just people going on a public trail.
Now if we were oficially recognized as trail patrol we maybe could have said at least anything but in this case all we could do is take pics and report to LE.

Why not send a patrol of real Law Enforcement out to the Con with the purpose of writing tickets? Use the money from fines to continue to enforce the rules, make the trail safer, cleaner and more enjoyable?

This is an accepted way to raise money for the General Fund. It's being done all over the country, especially in San Jose where I just moved from. They sent a bunch of cops out to neighborhoods to write parking tickets because the city needs money.

If they can double the fines in construction zones, then they can double the fines on that county road. Plow the additional money into maintenance of the trail.

I'd be willing to bet that you could find LEO volunteers, or at least honest members of the community that you could deputize, to hike / drive the Con back and forth all weekend long, from Friday morning thru Sunday night for free. Give each one a pad of blank tickets, a GPS, satelite phone, Polaroid camera, and a Taser.

Not the kind of attitude we need on the trail. :mad3:

I would just re-post it here but it is very potty mouth.
