I want a cheap set of 33-35" tires for my CJ. It sees road use and is wheeled on weekends. I found retread 33" mud terrains for 65 dollars, any one have experiance with retreads? Is it worth it?

Chances are I am going to burn them up on the road so I don;t really want to pay the big bucks for a fancy pants swamper.

I have herd very good things about those tires (I assume they are from Hi-Tech Retreading) Most of the writeups say they didn't realy need balancing they were so true. There was also a review of them in FourWheeler Magazine praising how good they are. I am planning on geting a set for my DD truck as soon as I get back from Moab.

thanks guys, I think I am going to run a set for now.

I would watch the F/S forum but I prefer to buy tires new.

In past issues of Four Wheeler mags I have seen an ad in the back section that sells retreaded tires. But at work we have something called the Bandag process, what is that? Anybody know?

Bandag is a company that has exclusive rights to a technique that is the best in the re-tread business. Not sure on the details, but if you REALLY want to know, I could get in touch with a buddy of mine who works at Bandag.

Sadly High-Tec Retreading doesn't make a tire bigger than 33". I'm damned determined to run 35" on the Cruiser if it kills me.

I say, everybody call them up and ask if they make bigger tires. Maybe they will catch the hint and make bigger tires. I'd really thrash the hell out of my rubber if I knew a replacement was only $80 away.. (33"=$65, 35"=$80?)

Can somebody say CHEAPSKATE WHEELIN' ??!?! :)

I run the 31s, a good friend runs the 33s, and I have called and talked to rick about the 35s, he said maybe , but its gonna be a while. It takes a LOT of cores to get an nitial run started, and 35 cores arent that easy to find, especially good ones. There is, however , a possibility that 37x12.50-16.5s will be added to the line, with the abundance of bald ass Hummer tires on the surplus market.

I love the tires, and will definitely be buying a set of 33s soon, and will continue toi run them in some form indefinitely. Hi-Tecs customer service is incredible, and Rick is a helluva guy to do business with.

I talked to high teck about running some of their retreads on a ranch truck, but they said that they would not stand up to the heat down here. Just letting you know.

Huh, they hold up just fine to SD summers (10-15 consecutive days of 100+)

I am not much farther north thatn you, and I have run mine for the last two summers, months of 100+ stright, and have had no problems...sounds like you night have talked to the Janitor instead of someone who actually has a clue.

I emailed rick at high-tec and he emailed me back the next day. good cumtomer service IMO. he answered my question in great detail. I didn't expect half that much. gonna get me some pansy ass 30x9.50's :flipoff2:

Which tread? The Mud, or the OTR Mud? I am running the OTRs, they dont look as aggressive as the Muds, but they are surprising as hell. Just think of an all terrain center, with an aggressive side lug design, very sticky.

I just buy 80% tread used tires at the local used tire armpit. Generally a heck of a lot cheaper than even retreads, and you don't have to worry about blowing off the outter skin on the highway.

Only those who have no clue worry about blowing the tread off...what you see on the side of the road are normally shitty, old ass ties used on a trailer way longer than they should have...retreads are used by most trucks on the road in some form, with those kinda numbers , you think you would see them every two miles, not one every now and then.

Hi Tec

I have purchased and used six (6) Hi or is it Hy Tek re-Tread Tires, Mud Terrain, size 33-12.5x15. The good news:
The tread is the Dunlop Raidal Mud Rover. Cant say too much about mud, they stick REAL good in deep soft snow. The tires balance real easy, ergo they're concentric. The tread appears a little shallow, but I didn't measure it. Just a comparison with my Conti and Pro Comp. These are higher void than the Pro Comp, less so than a Swamper, obviously. They shipped, delivered,tax, etc 5 tires for $400. Thats S. Dak to CA. They wear OK, they aren't too noisy.

More good: I ran them in rocks for maybe 6 trips including the Con. One cut sidewall, ruined tire. Because they are radials, at 8psi they flex under a 3400 lb Isuzu, and THEY STICK. I never lost a bead. I could hear some leaks when wedged against rocks, so in my case, 8 psi was the lower limit.

BUT

The BAD............ the other 4 tires have delaminated and leaked. This is apparently because I aired them down to 8 psi. My tires were BFG MT carcass, and at 8 psi they ARE GLUE. BE SURE to ask for 4 like carcasses. Based on my experience, they delaminate/fail if you air them down repeatedly. Hy tek told me that they aren't really made for this.

My long winded $0.02. EXCELLENT inexpensive tire.............. with use limitations. :flipoff2:

i was concidering these for my next set. high-tec said that they are continuously refining. i guess its the method of litterally melting the new tread to the carcas that makes these better retreads. the guy i talked to said they should be fine to 12 psi. in the past year i've only aired down to that (12 psi or lower)maybe once. i'm usually around 15-18.

they ARE inexpensive though. its almost worth running 2 spares. and with the 2 year warranty they never need to know you are airing down :p . if i get some and somthing happens in the warranty period i'd just be like WTF?(gonna check up on what exactly the warranty covers again.)

edit: woah, didnt' realize i was digging up a dead post. didn't realize it was from 3/2003, the 25th shoulda tipped me off.
