I know this is a bit of a noob question for PBB, but I come here to learn from the best.

This is my '92 XJ, 4.0, AW4, N231. The transfer case is exceptionally hard to get into neutral and 4L. Sometimes it drops right in, sometimes it makes horrid grinding noises. It also often will really fight you about coming back out of neutral. The case has plenty of fresh fluid, and it appears everything is adjusted correctly. It grinds and puts up a fight no matter what position the transmission is in.

This is the first automatic 4x4 I've had - my Pathfinder didn't fuss nearly as much about dropping into 4L.

Help please!

Actually, the NP 231 is designed for shift on the fly. Just lift off the gas and shift from 2hi to 4hi. But shifting to 4 low shouldn't be that hard as long as you are going slow enough and must be rolling forward a bit. But I agree with K.H. put the tranny in neutral first and see how it works.

MY 241 does the same if I shift into 4lo while moving. Like everyone else said, try it in N.
