I put the power steering off a 79 scout II onto my 77 Fj40. It works ok, and the pump seems really strong. It will easily turn the tiny p235s with one finger(Swampers coming when i get done building). However the steering box has a "rough" spot. It seems to be somewhere around the middle. For example, if you turn it lock to lock - its 1/3 easy, 1/3 hard, 1/3 easy. It seems to be like something inside the box is dragging or catching. It also leaks a little from right above the pitman arm. I was thinking about rebuilding it to fix the leak anyway. Does anyone know what would cause this? Is it fixable or junk?
Thanks in advance

steering box

I'll have to agree with the Brett man.
Turn it in as a core cause the seal that you see
leaking is the sector shaft seal, and the rough spot is more than likely a worn out worm gear and the ball that drives it!
It can be very complicated to rebuild w/o the proper equipment.
Not to mention very dirty!!!! Ewww!!!
