I need some help, I am changing the gears in my explorer rear
end from 3.73 to 4.88 the problem that I have is the center pin
will fit into the carrier with the new ring gear installed. does
anyone have help or suggestions. any help would be great.
On some higher ratios with the 8.8 the ring gear does stick up higher than the hole for the cross shaft. However I would advise AGAINST grinding the shaft, as alot of the time they are only case hardened and grinding will take the hard outer shell away. You are better off grinding down a tooth or two on the gear as most ring gears are through hardened and will not be affected by some grinding. For example the instructions for the 8.8 ARB warn against grinding their cross shaft, as do the Lock-right instructions.
Thanks for all of the info, I found that ford offers the different
cross pin for the 4.10 ratio. I talked to six states and they said
to grind the pin. I think I will try to get the new pin first, thanks
for all of the help.
