I have a sprung-under '82 CJ-7 with:
BDS 4" leaf springs
Performance Accessories 3" body lift

I was thinking of going down to a 1" body lift and slapping the longest shackles I can find onto my ride. Would this be a better set up? Does shackle length affect the way the springs flex?

The longer the shackle, the more flex you will have. It is up to you. I run 1.5" lift shackels on my 66'.

If you drive the jeep on the road much at all I would forget the long shackles. They can throw caster angles off and make it drive like crap. Also,to get 2" of lift with shackles they would have to be 4" long. If you want to reduce the body lift to 1"(which I think is a good idea) you might trim the fenders. If you don't want to cut them too much put some TJ flares on it.

Long shackles are the stupidest thing you can do if you actually use your jeep off-road. Not only do they put tons of stress on the bushings & mounts... they mess up your caster, and get whacked on every single obstacle offroad. This in turn bends your front springs.

What you need is a decent set of boomerang shackles to run on both ends. Run the fronts backwards so they can't invert if you whack them on a rock. The M.O.R.E. 9051HD's are nice for this, I've used them many times.

Also, ditch the body lift idea and trim your fenders. If that dosen't do it... bumpstop the thing, or go to a smaller tire. If you absolutely feel you need a body lift - keep it to 1" or less. Use something that won't collapse under load -like solid aluminum or steel (or hockey pucks... they actually work well), and decent grade 8 bolts & nylocks. Avoid that hollow plastic garbage the body lift companies sell at all costs.

Please explain the benefit of a boomerang shackle.

4" longer, meaning 8" total. I ran 2" lift shackles and 4" lift springs on my YJ when I was SUA. It rode a little rough, but it flexed good, even with a 3" body lift, I rubbed 33s. However like already mentioned, those shackles get hung up on everything. I constantly hit them off-road.

As for the boomerang, already mentioned they won't let you invert a spring, they won't hit the rear cross member, and in my expierences they ride better (don't know why, just my opinion).

They allow the spring to compress more by anlgeing around the front or rear crossmembers. Plus they look cooler.

Though I do need better bushings and greasable shackles to see my front or rear compress enough to get a benefit outta them :D
