I have a full width 9 im cutting down for my ranger. it necks down at either end. if i cut out what i need, all the area that is the diameter i need to put the flange back in will be gone. i am sitting here figuring out how to do this and get a good fit. any suggestions?

the 9" rears that i have look like the taper from the center into a regular axle tube, seems like there is atleast 6" on each tube that could be removed.

Find a 9" that is closer to the width you need:confused: Lots of Ford products have narrower 9" read ends from Granada's to Early Bronco's.

well i was given this one. it has the big bearing outers on it. so i'm just shortening it down. i have a 9" off a 72 bronco. i just wanted to step up the strenght.

What's the dia of the tube where you need to place the ends? Ballistic has some ends that slide over the tube that might work depending on the dia.

take a grinder to the welds right at the center section on the tubes grind it down then drive the tubes in to what u need...then just weld it back up...

I've learned over the years that just because it was given to you won't make it cheaper:laughing:

i wouldnt just drive the axle tubes in, cut the welds, pull em and the cut the tubes down to the width ya need. and weld em back up

To narrow a 9'' right you need a jig that uses a bar that goes through the bearing section in the pot with spacers to aline the bar on center then you need the outer spacers that will center the bearing flanges on the bar.This is the best way to ensure that everything is straight.The housing could have a slight tweak in it now.Can't tell unless you have a proper jig.If the ends are not welded on right you will go through outer bearings.Google narrowing jig for 9'' and you will find what i mean.

thanks guys. i'm a pipefitter, so getting flanges that may be hundreds of feet apart to lign up is my job. but i see how being a hair off would cause the bearings to wear faster. i'll do some more homework to see what housings i could use. i kind have been wanting to build a balistic housed 9" to match the 609 i want to build for the front, so i may look into that jig
