Its a 1989 cherokee (auto) all power/leather. The only reason I want it is its cheap and quite, unlike any other rig I own + I can start it up at night without the whole town knowing Im driving down the street:flipoff2: Now heres why Im posting.......I have heard of these things having alot of problems that just keep coming during daily driving, is this true? I dont plan on taking it to the trails just street driving. Its completly stock with some dents, my buddy only wants $500.00 for it. It does have some problem right now that comes and goes, It will turn over but it wont start till you wiggle some wires in the engine bay and shine a flashlight into some sensor. I dont know what wires cause I havent looked at it yet but I do remember a few people I know that had this same problem in the past. Are there other lame problems like this with these things?

if you can pull the front pass side carpet and check for rust, if you cant crawl under the rig with a mallet or something to check.. XJs are notorious for major rust on the floorboards. run the tranny through all the gears (PRND123) see if it does the hurkyjerky and take more than a sec or 2 to shift.
minor problems will raise up here and there, but thats normal for a 14 year old rig. as far as major problems like tranny taking a crap, injene seizing, thats pretty much luck of the draw because you dont know how it was treated by the guy that sold it to the guy thats selling it to you.

if it does not havy any problems (yet), for $500 it sounds pretty good. since your not going to take this on trails, you dont have to worry about the unibody doing most of the flexing inplace of the suspension. If you do buy it, just take a day or to and run through all the electricals/sensors, change the ATF/engine,gear oil/ water / filters and you should be good to go

good luck:)

That would be the crank position sensor. It won't let the engine fire until the flywheel has turned fast enough. My boss goes through them about one a year. I am still on the original on my '89. I got my XJ for free, but $500 is pretty good too.

dunno what you heard, but my 89 XJ has about 270K on-road miles and about 50K HARD off-road miles, (original engine/tranny) and it has been by far the most rock-solid reliable vehicle I ahve EVER owned.

I'd give $500 for another one in a heartbeat!!!!

I've broken it beyond what most would consider "drivable" and it still got me home under its own power (though three wheelin it left some nasty marks in the road leadin 1.5 miles to my house :D )

Hell yeah. Best DD/light wheeler for the $$ ever IMO.

I have owned 3 now consecutively. Each one has been very good to me and my next DD will be yet another.

With a locked front, and 31 ATs (next thin 33 MTs), it takes 2 people, gear, and 2 good sized (90# and 45#) dogs almost anywhere I want to play/camp.

Regardless, for $500 I do not think you can really go wrong as long as you give it a decent once over.

Good luck!
