or do I need to have the 350 bell housing?(the sm420 and bell housing came off of a 1966 Chevrolet 20 pickup)

It seems like the bell housing will not go over the starter?

I know this is probably a simple question for most of you but I would still appreciate input.

You need a different starter to go with the bellhousing. There are two-bolt starters, and three bolt starters. I can't remember which- but I know when I went 350, I pieced together all of the components, and had to get a different starter for the bellhousing.

Bellhousing + 350 = good. The starter you have = not right.

Get a 96 GM 350 PU gear reduction starter, they are more money but worth it, they will fit into the small hole on the 420 Bell housing.

Most (non-planetary) gear reduction starters will work with your bellhousing. They are easy to find but usually $100 or more. You could also use an early 3 bolt Chevy starter that bolts to the bellhousing instead of the block.

Every time I here a Cruiser with one of them it reminds me of spending the summers with him at the farm...................hmmmm I think I'll put one on my Cruiser.:flipoff2:

Sorry Butch but I went with a starter from a 1970 model because of $. Thanks for all the input guys it should be running with the 350 for the first time tomorrow! Now if I can just figure out this sm420 adapter stuff from advanced adapter! The drive train will be done and I can drive it over to Papa’s.
