Being new to the Samurai world (converted EB guy ). I have heard about putting some tracker or sidekick gears in a sami diff for lower gears. What is needed to do this swap??

And i did search but got no concrete answers :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

The front ring and pinion are compatible with the sami front and rear 3rd's.
1989 with the 1.3 and manual trans will have 5.62's
1989 to 1998 with the 1.6 and manual trans will have 5.12's
1989 to 199? with 3spd auto will have 4.62's
1992 to1998 with 4spd auto will have 5.12's


The years may not be 100% correct. You will need 2 yes 2 front diffs for this gear swap. You will also need a carrier shim that most of the vendors sell for a very affordable price.

Kick gears in a sammy

You can probably find a company that builds zuki stuff in England that can or does build a "hybrid" rear housing that uses the sammy axle tubes with the kick rear axle center. The kick has a larger rear diff. If noone there can make one, go through Trailtough and buy one from him. The front you can use untouched in the sammy front end without a locker. If you want to run a locker, you have to have the kick ring and pinion gears setup in the sammy dropout, but you need a spacer and retainer kit for the crosspins in the sammy diff. You can get that through Spidertrax, they are pretty inexpensive.

So if you got ahold of two matching gear ratio front differentials, is it just a 3rd member swap front and rear if you aren't running lockers? Or are we just talking about R&P gears here?

in the front you can take the kick 3rd as is (if you dont care about the alu housing).
in the rear it does not work - you need to use the R&P gears because of different axle splines.

So, does that mean the best choice would be to buy a front 3rd member,swap it into my existing sammi front and then buy the rear tracker or kick diff and swap the entire thing out for my existing rear sammi diff??

Can't you get lockers for the sidekick front diffs? I know you can get an ARB for sure....but it is 26 spline correct? It would be a good time to upgrade the front inner shafts and birfs...

The Grand Vitara front is a steel version of the sidekick front aluminum 3rd member also I think. They come with 4.30s or 4.87s....

What comes in the back of the Grand Vitara? Is it a 'kick rear end?

I would think that the GV front 3rd would be stronger than a rear sami 3rd?
