Basically, my w56 doesn't have a "return to center" spring. It feels like there are no shift gates and the stick just slops around.

I have yet to pull anything, but plan to have a looksie this weekend.

Anyone have any experience with this? Simple Fix?

pull the shifter and see if the plastic bushing is still in there.

There is a plastic cup that the shift lever sits in inside the shift tower. It forms the fulcrum point for the shifter. I've seen them disentegrate over time to where it caused sloppy shifting/hard to get into some gears.

There is also a teflon cap on the end of the actual shift finger. If that disappeared somehow I would imagine the shifting would be pretty sloppy. Just pull the shifter and check the shift seat and the teflon cap. Marlin sells new heavy duty ones. I got some and they work great, cheaper than stock too.

there is two hexcaps one on each side a little below the shifter (they look kinda like the revres light switch on the trany, but with no wires coming from them) those are the springs that push the shifter back to center, some time they get gumbed up with shit, stick and then dont push the sifter back to center. good luck

You can also replace the shifter seat housing to tighten up the shifter. I'd start w/ Marlins shifter seat bushings first.

Thank you gentlemen. I'll rip the thing apart this weekend and see what i can find....or not find.

Looks like i'll be able to replace all the bushings for $16
