I can get my hands on a chevy 350 and sm465 both recently rebuilt from 2 different people for $350. I know that the sm has a different bearing so is a direct bolt up possible or will I spend more for adapters than for the two as a whole?

what t-case should I use with the SM 465? My options are limitless as far as production car t-cases but I can't afford an atlas. I would prefer a direct bolt up....adapters are expensive!

Chevy used the sm465 behind the 350. Just get a chevy bellhousing <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0"> If it's a 4x4 trans a np203 or np205 for the transfercase.

Maybe I'm wrong but I would say by this post that you need to have someone else put this in for you. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">

hell, if someone else puts it in then how wil I ever learn? besides, then it's not MY rig......

I ask because of what I found on ORC about this tranny:

"It is an excellent 4 speed to swap into a Jeep with a Chevy engine. The SM465 has an unusual large input bearing retainer, it does not use the standard GM size. It is normally best to buy a matching bell housing with the transmission"

so are you sure that you know what you are talking about?

Chevy used two different bell housings if thats so hard to beleive, you would obvioulsy need the one with the larger hole. I'm wondering what you thought this tranny was out of?

I shot the man an e-mail but no reply yet, so to be honest, I have no idea what it was matted to, I think a 427 though.

I am looking to build up a half built 48 Willy's pickup, but it has no drivetrain (engine, tranny or t-case) but it does have a fully boxed frame, dana 44 front and corporate 14 bolt rear....
I want to build this think, wether I am a master mechanic or not.

Yes he knows what he's talking about. The SM465 is a Chevy transmission and a standard Chevy bellhousing will be in order to bolt it up to the 350. I would guess that you need one from a later model Chevy since it IS a larger input bearing retainer (5.125 vs. 4.875 or something like that) but that's what Chevy trucks came with between 68 and the early 80's.

As far as transfer cases, if it's a 4WD tranny, a 203 or 205 would be bolt on. Not the greatest ratio in the world, but no need for adapters that way. If it's 2WD, you're going to have to adapt it no matter what.

I think your attitude is good but starting with such a big project. You might want to learn to wrench on something a little more stock. That's if you want to wheel it. My questions is do you have some one with knowledge to help you?

Case in point, I know a guy that has almost $7000 tied up in a rig that has sit in his garage for almost 3 years. It has sit because he bit off more than he could chew. learn to crawl before you run.

so far I've helped a friend go dana 44 front, 60 rear, soa with 3.5 inch ome springs and a one inch body lift, arb's front and rear, 4.56 gears, 35's, tj flares, and a few other goodies.

helped another friend go 13 inches on an 86 4-runner (solid axle conversion of course!)

and then my rig.
89 jeep Comanche, 7 inches of lift, soa rear...would be other plans but now I am looking to build the Willy's.

I have done some wrenching, but XJ's are my forte. I'm trying to get more familiar with all the rest (Yj's, TJ's, and ZJ's are simple) so yes, this will be my first MAJOR project vehicle, but you have to start somewhere.

I probably misinterpereted what was on ORC in that I would need special adapers....which is not what I want to do.

Why isn't there any options for a t-case if it came from a 2wd? different spline counts?

SM465 was used in Chevys from the mid 60's on. A good source for a bellhousing is late model blazers, these will get you a bellhousing that has a bracket on it that will fit a Jeep clutch slave.

Try and get the bell housing from the guy selling you the trans, it won't do him much good unless he is putting in another SM465, the bearing hole is to big for any other GM trans.

The back of the case on the transmission is made different on a 2wd then a 4wd. (you have nothing to bolt the transfercase to on a 2wd)
