Hey Guys,
I read the thread on the Lincoln 101. this interests me, but I have a question.

Is there really a difference between being lincoln locked compared to getting a spool or Mini Spool? other the $$ of course.

some say that running lincoln locked is very stressfull on parts.
wouldn't it be any different then a spool? a spool there is no play. Welding the spiders and carrier, would act the same as a spool. so why would welding a carrier etc be worse or have more stress then a spool or mini spool?

just from the sounds of some of the conversations, there is a difference, but I can't see how there would be other then the difference in cost. a few sticks to weld compared to $$..

The difference is that a spool was designed to be just that, a spool. An open diff welded to perform as a spool wasnt designed for the application. Welding processes, differential manufacturing processes, and materials all play a part in a welded diff surviving.

I also saw the thread on the lincoln locker, and I was always told if you were going to weld an open diff, to take out the spider gears and fill in the gaps between every other tooth on the spider gears, then put it all back together. Whats up with welding the whole damn thing to the carrier?

There are different ways of doing this. Welding a few teeth in on the spiders and re-installing them is a Fozzy Locker.

Do what I did and search for Lincoln Locker or Welded Diff and you'll find lots of information and answers to questions like these.

the only difference is how its made/built, a spool is much stronger because its a solid piece of steel and its designed to do what it does. a carrier isnt designed to be a spool, but unless you dont know how to weld decent or are extremely hard on your right foot then youll be fine with a welded rear axle

welding the spiders togeth on a 8.8 is disastorous, so is installing a mini spool. Because either way, your running all your power through the factory weak link cross pin, and still have the weak carrier.

Welding the spiders to the case makes it a hell of a lot stronger, a full spool would make it even stronger yet. But you have to remeber, a lincoln locker is only as strong as the welds are good.

from what ive heard of, dont go with the "Fozzy Locker" by only welding a few teeth, the ones that arent welded, will try to climb the welds, possibly splittting the case and or tearing off a tube..
the full weld up is not bad, but drain all oils, and then clean with brake cleaner ALOT!!!!
I welded everything just so there was no flexing in anything, i figured the more that was there, the better it would absorb the shock.
mines in a amc 20 rear, and it worked well, never broke, and i beat my shit hard.... its going to be swapped, but only because it is severly bent...

so I guess I could have expected the debate. Thanks for the info guys. this is what I was looking for. so if welding what would be the best Rods for welding the spiders and carrier?

any preference in spools? specific brand etc..?

I have beat the crap out of mine and never broke it..If you weld it right it will last...save the 2bones on a spool and buy a locker for the front with the money you save..:flipoff2:
