OK.....Doing a SOA...Boxed in my frame horns....Thinking about what i am gonna do for a bumper mount....have a few ideas that will work with the way the spring hanger is now....Question is..........Do you think if i trim the spring hanger flush with the frame rail (cutting the 3/4" that extends past the frame rail, see pic below) will that weaken the hanger??? or do you think i should just design a mount for my bumper that will work as is?

IMO just weld on a mo fuggin chunk o' steel, after all , you only really need the bumper for cops

i love it when someone brings me a rig with the bumper welded to the frame. it lets me make them feel like a half wit and i get to charge a couple of hundred extra bucks to clean up thier "big mo fo" mess. even if i had a jeep i would think twice about welding it to the frame. a land cruiser deserves better treatment unless it is all ready a total hack job. this is only my personal opinion and i understand that other people look at it diferently and that is thier perogative. for me it indicates a lack of appreciation for the truck and the first indication that i am looking at a serious hackota.

omg who says it has to be a hack to be welded on .. besides why do you need a bumper on a rock crawer .
weld in some box tube across the frame horns put a winch plate on it and go . any bumper extending past the frame horn is a waste . they catch on shit wheeling .
bumpers should be as small as possible...

unless of course your planning an expedition rig then brush gaurds and huge bumpers are fine ..

beside butch look at that rig sitting in your yard .. it has a so called hacked bumper welded to the frame ...

if that's hacking a cruiser then every rig i ever build will be a hack cause i wont put a rock grabbing heavy ass piece of steel on the front of my trucks ......... ;)

hi luke,
i thought you didnt follow this list? Oh well.

thats because you and i have a different philosophy about cruiser building.

you prefer to do what you do to cruisers while i like to build cruisers that will still be wheeling 30 years from now. there is nothing wrong with your approach for what you are building.
thats why i love to see people bring me your stuff to straighten out. it is sooo profitable.
that cruiser in my yard is a perfect example of our different approachs. it is a nicely crafted truck that is not competitve, it is a trailer queen, probably cost 50 to 75 thousand to build and now is for sale for 20. it is fun to play with but is very limited in its use.

i prefer to build trucks that will be equally at home on the road as the trail. it will not be as good on the trail as a dedicated rock crawler but it will be very capable on the trail. it wont be as nice on the road as a porshe but will be dependable and fun to drive as well as look good.
didnt you put one of my bumpers on a customers truck? was he unhappy with it?

what i call a hack job may be what you call a rolls royce. thats why we all have our own opinions. i dont expect to change anyones mind about this stuff, just the way i see it.

by the way. how many jobs have i sent you and how many have you sent me? i do respect your work while not agreeing with all of it.
your friend butch;) :D :D

jeez ya ole cranky bastid this is not luke lmao hint i own a dog name ike :flipoff2:

you build some of the sweetest wine country mall wheelers i give you that :D

as far as how much return on invested capital you get from any built rig none of them hold there value ..
i doubt anything i built or will build will hold even half it's value

on the same note if a customer spends 40k for you to build a very drivable and solidly built cruiser i would bet he wouldnt get half it's value either at market .. thats just the sad truth

for the actual percentage the type of truck you build compared to the type of truck i build holding their prespective values . yours are built for a different purpose then what i build .. mine probably cost more to build but get abused badly on the trail therefor will lose way more of the cost then the type of truck you build ....

for investemt purposes buy real estate trail rigs or rockcrawlers are plain and simple a terrible investment

btw as far as if stinky will be wheeling 30 years from now ,it will probably outlast most cruisers, it was built to survive time . the cummins engine will outlast any gasser period . the axles in stinky will live long after people have changed many many birfields .
atlas transfer case will outlast the sucky toy case all that's left is sheet metal and steel so what i build is built to beat hard over time.
but then again i never intended for that cruiser to get groceries or cruiser the burger joints . different prupose all together and to each his own .

with all said i would own a truck you built proudly and when this restaurant takes off , and with the very little time i have you'll be the guy to build my all around usable ride

i worshipped that bumper yes it was art .. but thats before i knew what worked best in the rocks :p
and yes now i make food way higher profit margins :D then gluing metal together .... it's all about the ben franklins .

oh and butch it's not just your heavy ass rock catchers it's any bumper that protrudes past the frame horns ..... remember i drive off road with a different purpose then most .. i

mine has to be removable to get the steering box out.
Exactly. You must either have ram assist or arms of steel to wheel without power steering. If its the latter, whether on the trail or in the driveway, you'll be super bummed when you have to torch that bumper off. Also, from your other post, it looks like the box extends past the frame anyway, so welding a bumper directly to the frame wouldnt work?

I do think you want a super solid bumper on the front though, welded or whatever you decide, to make up for the big ass hole you drill through (and thus weaken) the cross member. The bumper on mine isnt huge, but is super solid.

good luck with the spring over. I cant wait to do mine.

Butch, you do top quality work. Love your stuff, especially your power steering/ bumper mounts on my rig. My arms are truely grateful. :D
