My friend has a '85 cj7 with a 258 and a t-5. I was wondering if that Jeep could have came with 1.6? or 1.7? gears. The highest gear I have read about is 2.73. We spun the pinion about 1 5/8 turns to one turn of the tire. Thanks for the help.

uuuuhhhh.... no.

a vehicle can't run with gearing that tall.

either crack the case and count the teeth (ring/pinion=ratio) or do the little tire thingy again.

does your friend have a locker or posi traction? i dunno how that might affect readings...

even though this is a seriously subject if your differential isn't locked, and you are only spinning ONE tire, you must multiply your result by two.

crack it open and count

Big 4x4 Jeep Toy Bender, sorry about the post but it didn't seem right to me so I thought I'd ask. We checked it about ten times cause it didn't look right. Thanks for the help. I am trying to get the friend to swap out the stock stuff and go with 35's but he says 33's are big enough for now. I'll convince him when I get the jeep done and we go wheeling. I'm in the middle of a ground up on an '83 cj-7. It's getting 44's with detroits front and rear with 4.56's, SOA with 2.5" superlift springs, 350, sm465, TJ flares, Full roll cage, 35" Boggers. I Hope it will be done by spring. Thanks again for the help
