OK...search turned up very few specifics about my question...

I have a line on an NP208 from a J10 truck. It was behind a TF727. Is this a possible swap into my TJ? I know the 208 has a 23 spline input, and my 231 is 21. Can I mix and match some internals to save from having to buy an SYE? I know I'll lose some low range, but I think that can be aided slightly by axle gearing. I plan to go Atlas someday, but I'm looking for a cheap fix until I can afford one.

if you swap a 23 spline output shaft into whatever tranny you have, you can bolt up the 208. it's possible. you'll lose about 4% of low range gearing; that's next to insignificant.

you might need new shafts. i'm not too familiar with the 231, but the 208 seems to be a bit shorter than the reported (i'm looking on AA's site) 20.5" of the 231.
