Alright, first, I did a quite lengthy search and found a lot of good stuff, but I've still got some unanswered ?'s.

Here's my situation in brief. I've got an 88 runner with a 3.0 v6 and auto tranny. Stock 4.10's and locked rear on 35's. Now, the motor's got over 200K on it, but it's still healthy with no smoke etc. But, the auto tranny is all but toast. It no longer has 2nd gear at any time, even manual shifting it and i'd bet the torque converter/hydro pump is junk too. In the long run, I'll go to a motor swap with a 4.3 or 5.0 or 350..., but it simply is not in the budget for the near future. So this brings me to the delimma of rebuilding the slush box ($1500 now, and useless in the future with swap/crawlers...) or go and drop in a 5spd and be able to use it with almost what ever I decide to do in the future (at least the t-case).

I've talked with Marlin and what I'm looking to do is use a R150 bellhousing/flywheel/clutch and mate that to the R151 turbo tranny with the good gear driven case and lower 1st gear in the tranny.

Now with the questions:

1. I've heard mixed responses on whether the t-case x-member from my auto can be used or whether I'll need to modify/redrill frame for it or use one out of another truck, also can someone confirm if driveshaft mods are necessary?

2. Will I need a new speedo cable?

3. Will the clutch/brake petals from a 4cyl/Turbo work or do I have to use the ones that came with the v6 (I've heard they're prone to problems/weak design)?

I parked mine next to my friends with an 86 4cyl 5spd and it looked like everything would bolt up no prob, even drilling the hole for the Master cyl should be no prob.

4. Does anyone recommend a clutch to use with this setup, or does anyone have input on the clutch that Marlin sells?

5. I've heard mixed reports about the computer ECT system being retained, can anyone comment on this with experience?

Lastly, for fun, those who've done the swap, can you tell me briefly about the power gains/gas mileage increase that you've seen since doing the swap. Currently I get almost no power to the rear wheels and mileage is around 11, so anything is gonna help.

Thank you for you help, I like to do things right the first time.

Anything you learn, I'll be writing down. The exact same swap is floating in my head.
However, I'm not is such an emergency, since my tranny is still good, and I get 20mpg...

Pazuzu- Glad this info will help others too. I've got most of the "hard" parts nailed down after talking with Marlin, but it's the small things that get you on these conversions. Once I get this done, if you have any ?'s (or anyone for that matter) feel free to pm.

All input is appreciated!

Hi ColorRunner, you might try & get ahold of Mark R. at this URL.
He did the swap on his '88, and may have some tips.
I know he's pretty happy with the extra power from the stick vrs. the auto.

Corey- Thanks for the link. His was actually one I went to thru my search, but, Yes my V6 is the problem here as opposed to his 22re. I'm sure I'd be ok with that swap, but things tend to be just a little different with these V6's.

Anyone need a bellhousing for a 5 speed? I have one left over from my 4.3 swap....'89 runner 3.0 ...now has 4.3 in front of Toy 5speed.

Hey brandon, did you ever solve your clutch problem? I tried a Probe MC but it was the same problem---lack of travel.....

Dude man get some gears for that thing. I know it is not an answer to your q's but you asked about gas mileage. v6 only have like 10-15 more hp. then 22re's. Even with the manual trans. You are still going to get terrible gas mileage. I have a 5spd and with 33 boggers it sucked real bad. 4.88's and will be happy with it after your 5spd. swap. Just my 2 cents.....

True, gears will help compensate for the tires and help overall acceleration, but the tranny's first, only so much $ to go around.

"True" v6 gears are pricey, and I'd like to do a SAS as does everyone, so why waste $ on 7.5"gears for the front? I do not have the luxury of running in 2x4 (regrearing back only and waiting for SAS) as it's my DD too and it'll be in 4x4 quite alot come 2 months from now when the snow starts to fly here in Colorado.

As for the hp difference, stock 22re's have 116hp vs. 150 for my v6 plus I've done several mods on mine for even more. The v6 torque is also 189 ft/lbs stock which is again considerably more than a 22re (140ft/lbs). The v6 still isn't a powerful engine, but It'll be much better when it will actually shift gears.

I've got a new O2 sensor going on so that should help the gas mileage.

Thanks, anyone know answers to 1-5?
